Triptych - Volume 12: Idiot-Syncratic
Welcome back once again to Triptych, the feature that asks, “why have I never heard of this game?” and occasionally, “why did I have to hear about it now?” After last week’s exploration of a cultural phenomenon creeping into marketing executive’s “necessary” list, we’ll visit another baffling trend: laboured quirkiness.

We all accept that not every game can be about an international espionage conspiracy involving big guns, or an invasion by aliens involving big guns. There are plenty of greatly appreciated classic titles that have nary a hint of manliness; Bubble Bobble doesn’t pretend to be anything but what it is, and nor does Puyo Puyo; both titles are cute and slightly oddball, but with a core gameplay that is as solid as a rock and not – and this is important – clones of existing games.

2nd Annual Xbox LIVE Arcade Awards
Not too long ago we checked out the top 20 Xbox LIVE games of 2008. As fascinating as the knowledge of best-sellers and most-playeds over a whole year is, though, perhaps an even better indication of a game's popularity is the Annual Xbox LIVE Arcade Awards, now in its second year, in which Xbox LIVE users vote on their favourite LIVE Arcade titles in a number of categories. Or, you know - their favourites in the few months leading up to the awards! Well, let's take a look at the winners anyway. Warning: plenty of Castle Crashers and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix ahead!

Swords & Soldiers slicing and smashing onto WiiWare
Whatever happened to the group of Dutch students that created successful WiiWare title De Blob, the lead character of which proved so popular that the city of Utrecht, where the game is set, adopted him as their official mascot? Well, it turns out that some of them went on to found their own casual games company, Ronimo Games, and are hard at work putting together an amusing little title by the name of Swords & Soldiers. What is it? Well, like De Blob it's a little tricky to sum up, so why not let this new trailer speak for itself?

Xbox 360: The Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008
The end of the year is typically the time for roundups and recaps, summing up the year past - but sometimes, it takes a little while longer to compile all the information, bumping the news to the new year. This is the case with the official Xbox 360 Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008 list, which has just been announced.

We have here the list of both the the Original Xbox and Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (both lists based on unique users), as well as the Top Arcade Titles (based on full versions purchased). Not sure if there's any real surprises here (hello, Halo), but it is interesting to note the number of demos in the list that are not accompanied by the full game.

Castle Crashers: What's going on with multiplayer?
One of the most eagerly-anticipated titles of the year arrived this week, bringing Castle Crashers to the masses via Xbox Live Arcade.

...unfortunately, since its release, the number of people singing the praises of the game have nearly been drowned out by those complaining about online bugs and issues finding multiplayer games.

While nothing official has been said from developers The Behemoth, they're now being hounded for answers, as unofficial polls around the interwebs suggest that up to 50% of gamers have been consistently unable to connect to any multiplayer games at all, since the title's launch.

Looks like I'm not the only one who's noticed that it's really very very cold these days in most parts of the country. Xbox have piped up with an invitation to celebrate The Arcade Winter - offering "five fantastic arcade games" to keep you warm over the next five weeks.

It all kicks off tomorrow afternoon, with the highly-anticipated retro shooter Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2, and then progresses over the next month and a bit with games such as Braid, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Galaga Legions and Castle Crashers.

If this doesn't keep you toasty, I don't know what will!
