Spider-Man and Batman are all very well, but what about the comics fan who likes their protagonist a little less... goodie-goodie. Let's just say The Punisher doesn't feel the need to dress up as an animal of any kind, and he certainly never wears tights, much to the disappointment of his female fans. He does get his own new Playstation Network game, which has been scheduled for release in early July.

2008 has been a little different from the standard industry year, in that we’ve seen a lot of major titles released outside of the holiday shopping season. Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots were all released in the first half of the year. One would think that that might make for a less than stellar holiday line up, but the game publishers of the world (bar Nintendo) are inclined to prove otherwise.
Over the next two weeks (due to the sheer number of releases), The Warp Pipe will be boldly predicting the quality of new games in the next quarter.

It's been a pretty dull couple of weeks at The Warp Pipe, with too much time spent chasing Xbox 360 Achievements (through Thrillville: Off the Rails, Spider-Man 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) and waiting around for Soulcalibur IV and Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 to be released. Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network look to be heating up over the next couple of weeks – they still don't hold a candle to similar services on the PC, but if this is a sign of things to come, then I am all for it.
This week, I thought we'd pay a visit to the trivia vault to learn another bunch of fun video game facts.

10 Eps into it and still havin fun. We went hard on the reviews this week due to popular demand, and you can expect more of the same in future weeks as well. Movies made into games have been a hot topic on the GG forums recently, and by serendipity we review 2 of those this week. Here's a little preview for tonight...

After last week's shakeups, these new charts are a little more "normal" (whatever that means). Half of the PC charts are taken up by The Sims 2 variants, and the DS has slipped back to only have one title in the overall top 10.
I did giggle a bit though - last week, WoW: The Burning Crusade was #1 in the PC charts. This week, vanilla World of Warcraft has taken its place. I can't help but imagine that last week, people rushed out, after hearing this new "Burning Crusade thing" sounded pretty good, not realising that it was an expansion... so this week, they all had to rush out again and buy WoW so they could actually play their new game. It's possible.

A couple of times while reading this week's charts, I had to double-check I was looking in the right place. God Of War 2 topping the overall charts is no great surprise, and having those Ninja Turtles in the second spot is sort of to be expected... until I realised that it was the DS version at #2, while the PS2 was all the way down at #7.
Again, the Nintendo handheld continues to dominate, this time with five of the top ten... and no PC titles in the overal charts at all. Slackers, the lot of you.

To coincide with the release on the silver screen Spider-Man 3 is currently available on Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 2, and the Nintendo DS. Based on the Marvel comic this new Spidey game will follow the plot of the latest movie and allow gamers to play Spider-Man's dark half for the first time. The game is set in New York City (haven't heard New York politicians complaining about the setting of this game yet) and with the sandbox style of gameplay will allow gamers to explore over 20 kilometers of dynamic environments. The Spider-Man games have been improving as the franchise gets older. The freedom to be able swing around the city and virtually fight crime in any way that you want holds a lot of appeal for this franchise.

Fans of Spider-Man, prepare your preferred video viewing technology, I've got a special treat for you this morning. Take a peek behind the scenes of Spider-Man 3, with some of the developer team from Treyarch.
This in-depth trailer discusses next-gen technology and how it is used to bring NYC to life, looks at the objectives in making this a killer game - and, of course, talks about the various villains you can expect to see Spidey up against.

When I heard there was a new Spider-Man 3 trailer out, my first question was "Is Venom in it?"
...I was then told I'd have to watch the "Intoxicating" trailer to find out.
I'm not going to give it away, but this video apparently contains what ingame footage from both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the new game - and features "several" characters.
Well, well worth checking out.

...we're all familiar with Spidey swinging around from building to building, rooftop to rooftop - but this new video shows him doing his Spidey thing in NYC's underground, and in the city sewers.
Grab it now and take a look at how Spider-Man 3 is shaping up. And then sing the theme song for the rest of the day. That's an order.

And now - to round out the trilogy of "big announcements" from GDC, we have Nintendo, with their second-quarter release lineup for Wii and DS.
There's a couple of Mario variants and a version of Big Brain Academy for Wii, as well as Pokemon Battle Revolution - not only the first Pokemon game for the Wii, but also the first Wii game to utilise Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Play, and the first Wii game to be controlled with the Nintendo DS - in fact, it's the first game to link the Wii and the hand-held DS!
There's also two new Mario variants and Big Brain Academy for Wii, and Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl for DS. Big N's shaping up for a pretty impressive second quarter, it seems!
