We all expected F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin to be shocking - as the sequel to one of the more terrifying games of the past five years it had a lot to live up to. That said, we didn't really expect the shock to come from the Australian Classification Board, which has considered the game to be unsuitable for Australian gamers, refusing it classification in this country.
While we have a copy of the RC statement, we're currently waiting to hear back from the Board about the details behind their decisions - as well as comments from publishers Warner Bros about what their plans are now. Did Alma get a little too bloodthirsty for Australian audiences?

When it comes to the Australian introduction of a restricted R18+ rating for video games, everything seemed to be going smoothly. Back in March, we told you that the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General were calling for a discussion paper and public consultation process regarding video game classification.
At the time, Michael Atkinson, the South Australian Attorney-General, had gone on record as strongly objecting to any change in legislation, but he - and the other censorship ministers - had agreed "in principle" to gathering public opinion on the proposed new classification. This week, however, Mr. Atkinson has now effectively halted the process, indefinitely delaying any changes to the legislation.

There will be no Homecoming for Australians, with the Classifications Board deciding that Konami's scary adventure, Silent Hill: Homecoming is inappropriate for Australian audiences.
We're currently waiting for the details of the decision to effectively ban the sixth game in the Silent Hill franchise, but as it stands, it seems we're going to miss out. We are also waiting to hear back from local distributors Atari Australia, to see if they've made any decisions as to whether they will appeal the refusal, or else re-submit an edited version of the game.

BioShock was a big deal when it was launched last year for the PC and Xbox 360 - now that it's a few months away from being released on PS3, is it still such an exciting event?
We've been told it'll have new content, to go with the new platform, and today we have a new video to tempt you some more, but if you were hoping to catch some of the new and innovative features in the first-look trailer, you'll have to keep looking.

This weekend marks the midway point of 2008, a milestone which has either come very slowly or out of nowhere, depending on your perception of time and space. I find myself in the latter group, stuck in a state of mind where it's March or April, largely out of desperation for some warm weather. Most of my recent time has been spent wrestling a Metal Gear Solid 4 review, which you'll see on the site soon, and the new Alone in the Dark game, which has some promising concepts destroyed by wretched controls and a multitude of glitches.
With the midway point reached, I thought I'd take the time this week to look back at the major events and releases of the first six months of the year.

With word on the street that Dark Sector is currently being re-worked so that it can meet the Australian classification standards and get itself allowed into the country, I figured I'd fill you in on some details of the multiplayer aspect of the game, so you're all ready for it when it finally reaches our shores.
Firstly though - an observation. If you were after this game and weren't sure what platform to buy it for, it's worth noting that while both PS3 and Xbox 360 will allow you to create, search for and join multiplayer games, only the Xbox 360 will give you the options of Custom game, Quick game or Ranked game, with the PS3 merely allowing players to search for or create multiplayer games.

Some of you may have already discovered this, but it seems the glee we experienced over the possible R18+ rating for video games may have been a tad premature.
While the topic will still be discussed at the upcoming Standing Committee of Attorneys-General (to be held on March 28th), the controversial classification update is still being argued against by at least one, very vocal, state attorney-general - Mr. Michael Atkinson, the South Australian Labor minister.
...and of course, this is a problem, as any changes to the classification system need to be agreed on by the Commonwealth and all the state and territory attorneys-general.

Despite many gamers writing it off as a lost cause, the Federal Government has announced they are considering updating the Australian classification system for games, finally including an R18+ restricted rating.
Currently in this country, there is no adult classification for video games, unlike other publications such as films and magazines - which means that any games that do not meet the MA15+ standard are simply refused classification. This has seen games like the recent sci-fi shooter Dark Sector effectively banned from sale in Australia due to a ruling by the OFLC that it contained excessive graphic violence - including "decapitation, dismemberment of limbs accompanied by large blood spurts ... and exploded bodies".

Sorry to bring the topic up again, seeing as we were only just talking about it last night, but it looks like our censorhip laws have struck again.
This time, feeling the full force of the blow is PS3 and Xbox 360 sci-fi shooter Dark Sector, which was due for release in March of this year. The third-person title sees gamers stepping into the shoes of a black ops agent trapped in a quarantined town. Think it's simple? The character has been infected with a nerve agent which gives him superhuman abilities and mutations - and must fight off guards and other mutants. Apparently, the role features some pretty nasty, high-impact violence, including some particularly vicious finishing moves that can be performed on various enemies.

Dark Sector the up and coming title from Digital Extremes in 2007 on PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 has just had PC scratched from its list of platforms.
The game, a third person shooter about a a CIA agent trapped in quarantined town, infected by a nerve agent, fighting guards and mutants, all the while battling his own daemons and mutations (c'mon, it could happen), recently had the PC icon left off its new website, leading to speculations that it was going to be a purely console title. This was later confirmed in a video interview on Gamespot.
