Wheel of Time project signs on scriptwriter
It's been a long time since the late Robert Jordan's epic fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, attracted a video game conversion, and this causes both mourning and relief amongst the books' hardcore fan base. There appears to be some hope for the latest incarnation, though, with screenwriter Chris Morgan signed onto the project as Story Director to assist in adapting the rich and prolific source material, hopefully without thoroughly butchering it.

The Warp Pipe - 26/07/09
The video game industry has come far in the last thirty years, but we still can’t shake the perception that everything needs to be released in the fourth quarter of the year. It has gotten better, particularly in the last two years where heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto IV, Resident Evil 5 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl were released in the first half of the year. Q4 2009 is still stacked with high profile titles, some of which will inevitably be overlooked in favour of Halo 3: ODST, Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2.

This week, The Warp Pipe is going to shed a bit of light on titles which are deserving of your attention this year, but are at risk of being lost in the Q4 shuffle.

Gears of War PC patch fixes certificate issue
On the 29th of January, 2009 - the PC version of Gears of War ceased working due to a security certificate that the game's executable was signed with. This prevented gamers from running the title on their PCs, and extended to the game's SDK. Epic Games have now released a patch for the PC version of Gears of War that fixes the embarrassing issue that was identified just over a week ago.

The patch is the third update for the PC version of Gears of War, and weighs in at a tiny 6.29MB. It appears that the patch only fixes the certificate issue, but it does mean that the game can be played without turning one's PC clock back. While Epic Games were taken by surprise regarding the issue, it is good to see that a fix has now been released.

Gears of War on the PC halts due to security certificate
The date 29th of January, 2009 - seems inconspicuous enough, right? No dramatic events are usually scheduled for that day, correct? It would seem not - unless of course you would like to play your PC version of Gears of War. Users on Epic's official forums have discovered that the game has ceased working as of that date - instead giving the error "You cannot run the game with modified executable code."

Moments later, several more reports had come in - with others unable to run the game, without having modified their executable files. Puzzled, some crafty gamers set to some detective work, in a bid to discover the issue. As it turns out, the PC version of Gears of War has a security certificate assigned to it - one which expires on the 29th of January, 2009. Epic Games were taken by surprise, and are currently working with their publisher, Microsoft, in an attempt to fix the issue.

Xbox 360: The Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008
The end of the year is typically the time for roundups and recaps, summing up the year past - but sometimes, it takes a little while longer to compile all the information, bumping the news to the new year. This is the case with the official Xbox 360 Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008 list, which has just been announced.

We have here the list of both the the Original Xbox and Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (both lists based on unique users), as well as the Top Arcade Titles (based on full versions purchased). Not sure if there's any real surprises here (hello, Halo), but it is interesting to note the number of demos in the list that are not accompanied by the full game.

James Bond: Quantum of Solace - Exclusive Interview / Preview / Video
For a long time, I’ve been a fan of James Bond. I’ve read the books, watched the films, but have never actually played a game based on the stories - a stance which may be about to change.

While in Los Angeles recently, we dropped in to visit with Treyarch - who are currently tidying the loose ends on their latest Bond game, the Xbox 360 / PS3 version of Quantum of Solace - and they very kindly let us have a look at their baby, and ask some questions of co-designer/directors Jeremy Luyties and Adam Gascoine.

We had the video camera with us again for this trip, so grab your popcorn, sit back and enjoy as we find out about Quantum of Solace.

Xbox LIVE down for 24hr maintenance - try these instead!
Okay guys - I hate to be the one to remind you, but - speaking of Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE is now offline for the next 24 hours. It'll be back at 4:29pm (Adelaide time) tomorrow, September 30th - and, I must remind you, there won't be any obvious changes for you to play with, after the time away. It's all just a preparation for the New Xbox Experience, which is due to arrive later this Spring (Fall in the northern hemisphere!).

To keep yourselves occupied for the next 24 hours, the guys at Xbox have taken the time to prepare a list of 10 Things to Do While Xbox LIVE is Offline for Maintenance - and we've got all ten, right here.

UPDATED TO ADD: Maintenance is taking longer than expected, we'll keep you posted when we know an expected time for services to resume.

The Warp Pipe - 21/09/08
The Holiday flood begins this Thursday with the release of an ungodly amount of games, including Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, Crysis Warhead and Wipeout HD, and doesn’t stop until the week before Christmas. To save you all a bit of time, I like to run through the release list at the start of a given quarter, and make sweeping generalisations as to the quality of upcoming games.

Last week’s Warp Pipe covered the games of October, so this week we’re looking at November’s big hitters, including Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead and Mirror’s Edge.

The Warp Pipe - 14/09/08
2008 has been a little different from the standard industry year, in that we’ve seen a lot of major titles released outside of the holiday shopping season. Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots were all released in the first half of the year. One would think that that might make for a less than stellar holiday line up, but the game publishers of the world (bar Nintendo) are inclined to prove otherwise.

Over the next two weeks (due to the sheer number of releases), The Warp Pipe will be boldly predicting the quality of new games in the next quarter.

Fable 2: A new trailer begins an adventure
Fable 2. If there is another game that is as eagerly anticipated on the Xbox 360, then I (like many others), must be living in a cave. From the mind of industry legend, Peter Molyneux, Fable 2 will present the player with a larger game world, enhanced graphics and a number of other improvements over the original, released in 2004.

Today - we've got a treat for those awaiting the title, in the form of a new trailer. There is not much I can say about the trailer, other than the fact that it makes me considerably more interested in the title than what I was prior. So what is all the fuss about?

Australian Weekly Sales Charts - Week Ending 19/08/07
I think that this week's charts feature perhaps the least movement I've seen in any charts. Most of the top orders of the games stayed pretty much in the same spot they were in last week, and nothing really changed. Maybe next week we'll see the new revolution in gaming! (It's due any day now, they tell me...)

To recap: Australia is still a nation of 90s retro vocalists, PC gamers are still stuck in another world (full of the craft of war), Xbox 360 gamers prefer their war in gear form, Wii still likes to party, PS3 wants to change into something else and roll out, and DS is still overrun by pocket monsters.

It's not very often I'll admit to not knowing something - but, seriously - if you know what happened last week to make Robin Hood's Quest for PS2 pop up in the #6 overall position, I'll be very grateful.

To recap in case you don't want to read the whole lot - while last week saw guitar heroes rockin' out like it was 1985, one week sees the cool PS2 kids hanging out a decade later. PC gamers are still hopelessly devoted to that MMORPG game, Xbox 360 still meshes with some war-like Gears, Wii is still partying with a plumber, I hear the PS3 folds up into a letterbox, these days, and the DS is still overrun by pocket monsters.

Meanwhile, it's a big week for PS2, taking out six of the top ten, with the remaining three made up of DS titles and a lonely Wii entry.

We are still a nation of party-goers, with the eighth celebration thrown by a fat little plumber topping the charts again this week. It's good to see the Wii back up in the top section, long may she reign!

In other news, the PC chart's a bit surprising, with an attack from a futuristic battlefield coming right up behind a couple of warring worlds. Xbox 360 is still wielding chainsaws and fending off locusts, a bunch of cars is storming around the PS3, DS is still overrun by pocket monsters, and the PS2 has stopped singing and now thinks it's an 80s hero.

Who likes to party? Wii likes to party!
...and with that, we herald in this week's game sales charts, with a little fat plumber sitting proudly at the top.

In other news, there's a bit of a WoWser resurgence (coming up to BlizzCon... but it could be purely coincidental) and the 360 gets a bit oldschool (for them), with Marcus Fenix back at the top. The rest, however, stay pretty much the same - PS3 is resisting, PS2 is singing, and the pocket monsters have taken the DS by force once more.

Gears of War - New content only for PC
Xbox 360 gamers are in for a shock. Why not? "Technical reasons", apparently. PC's getting a lot more stuff, and that's difficult to deliver as an update for 360 - not to mention the fact that an incompatible version of Unreal Engine 3 was used to create the PC version.

Avatar: The Legend of Aang (known as Avatar: The Last Airbender in America and various other places around the world) is a video game based on an animated television series. That's not impressive. What is impressive is that as of February 2007, the game (for DS, GBA, PC, PS2, PSP and Xbox) had sold over one million copies worldwide... and that the console versions of the game were developed by THQ Studio Australia, up in Brisbane.

What's also impressive is that it's now in the national Australian sales charts, popping up at #5 in the Wii charts, #6 in the DS version, and #5 for the PS2 charts - as well as #10 overall. Nice work, kids!

The rest of the charts? ...The Burning Crusade continues to dominate, Gears of War makes a comeback, Mario and Wario battle it out on the Nintendo side of things, and we're apparently still a nation of cricket fans.
