A couple of weeks ago, we started getting excited about Eminence's annual symphonic concert celebrating all things orchestral and geeky, A Night in Fantasia. I'm sure plenty of you have your tickets squirreled away already, but for those who need a little bit more convincing - and to inspire further jealousy in we who cannot attend, curse it - Eminence have been kind enough to update the list of notable guests.

The video game industry has come far in the last thirty years, but we still can’t shake the perception that everything needs to be released in the fourth quarter of the year. It has gotten better, particularly in the last two years where heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto IV, Resident Evil 5 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl were released in the first half of the year. Q4 2009 is still stacked with high profile titles, some of which will inevitably be overlooked in favour of Halo 3: ODST, Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2.
This week, The Warp Pipe is going to shed a bit of light on titles which are deserving of your attention this year, but are at risk of being lost in the Q4 shuffle.

It has been a long time coming, but Korean company Hanbitsoft have finally made an official statement on the US and European publishing of Hellgate: London. No, it's not good news, and no, it's nothing we didn't already know - but it perhaps puts the final nail in the beleaguered MMO's Western coffin, so now we can all put away our widow's weeds and move on. The announcement came tacked on to the end of a press release full of envy-fueling news of the latest patch as Hanbitsoft attempt to lovingly smooth over the game's rough spots.

It’s hard to stomach, that a game developed by a number of talented former Blizzard Entertainment employees that not only worked on Diablo II but lead by Bill Roper failed so terribly that it was the demise of a whole company. Hellgate: London flopped so hard that it ranks as one of the biggest failures in 2008 and that failure was the catalyst behind Flagship Studios going belly-up back in July 2008. Another MMOG in development by the company, Mythos, showed a lot of potential also fell to the wayside in the cataclysmic financial destruction.
Hellgate: London continues to run on life-support provided by Namco Bandai, but come the 1st of February, 2009 the servers will shut down. Late last year, stating in a press release the Korean publisher and developer HanbitSoft said development will continue on the title and will switch to a free-to-play subscription model. Only time will tell for sure.

If anyone has experienced both the highs of success and lows from failure in the game development industry it’s Bill Roper. His new journey takes him to Cryptic Studios as their Design Director on Champions Online.
For a little background check on Bill Roper his career started at Blizzard Entertainment where he worked his way up and served as a Director and also Vice President of Blizzard North. His resume is a budding game developer’s dream showcasing his work on the Diablo, Warcraft, and StarCraft franchises. Leaving Blizzard Entertainment in 2003, Roper co-founded Flagship Studios and PingO, and the newly minted CEO oversaw development on Hellgate: London. Failure followed.

With the sad news of Flagship Studios closing its doors still in the minds of Hellgate: London fans, publisher Namco Bandai have announced that they will be providing "free server support" for the title into 2009.
By "into 2009", Namco Bandai mean that they'll be supporting Hellgate London until the 31st of January, 2009. Game servers for Hellgate: London will shut down the following day, on the 1st of February, 2009.

Easter has passed us by, and I'm sure many of you had a good time gorging yourselves on chocolate. The Warp Pipe spent its holiday nestled up to a copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, with a few hours dedicated to attaining that all important 100% in Bully: Scholarship Edition. It has been a busy week for gaming here, actually; I think I managed about 3,000 new achievement points since the return of my 360 (which pushed me into the top 100 Australians on MyGamerCard), I pushed my way through the majority of Smash Bros' single player modes and I've been reading Steven Kent's The Ultimate History of Video Games, which I'll talk about more in a later column.
This week I thought we'd do something a little different: spurt out some interesting facts, insightful thoughts and bold proclamations. As promised last week, we'll look at one of Shiny's most underappreciated efforts in Sacrifice, and throw our cheap gaming buddies a bone with the Gothic Universe collection.

A brief history - fresh from working as Chief Background Artist for Diablo II, David Glenn joined many of his colleagues from Blizzard North and branched out, which was when Flagship was formed. He was now in the country promoting their latest baby, the zombie shoot-em-up MMO Hellgate: London - where he'd taken on the position of Art Director.
The game was a long time coming, and - like all games - went through a few changes in the years spent on development. One of the major changes was the structure of the MMO itself, which sees gamers playing online for free if they want - or paying a bit extra for a few more bells and whistles. I asked how that had played out for them, from a developer's perspective - was it the sort of thing they'd do again?

I was reading the other day that overseas consumers found the Australian gaming market quite amusing. In most other territories, a highly-anticipated game (such as, oh, Halo 3) is #1 in the charts for one week, as everyone rushes out to buy it. In Australia, however, it hangs around the top order for a while, demonstrating Aussies' laidback attitude. "Meh, I'll buy it next week."
That said, while Master Chief still rules the 360, he's been knocked from the overall top spot by a little bandicoot with some big enemies. PC gamers are heading to a horrific Britain, Wii are visiting the carnival while PS2 are still playing soccer, and the DS crowd are challenging their minds some more.

Those of you still interested in Hellgate: London, rejoice. The game has gone gold, and is right on track for release on the first of next month, exclusively for PC.
Can't wait for some post-Hallowe'en gaming? Then stick around, a single-player demo is coming out this weekend, to give you a taste of what you can expect later. It'll give you a chance to play two of the six total character classes, and run around the streets of London, in a handful of key storyline and side quests.

We're lucky we don't really celebrate Halloween in Australia - otherwise we might be disappointed that we don't get Hellgate: London (an appropriately spooky game) until the day after.
That's right, one of the most anticipated hack / slash / shooter games released this year is set to arrive in Australia on November 1st - just one day after the North American release (and a day before Europe!).
The game, which marks "the next leap" in action RPGs combines the addictive and complex gameplay of traditional role-players with the visceral action commonly associated with FPS.

One of the most anticipated game releases for this year would have to be Hellgate: London. A good portion of the team who were responsible for Diablo and Diablo 2 are behind this game. They left Blizzard and have created their own company Flagship Studios in order to bring Hellgate: London to the gaming public. We have a trailer straight from E3 for you and some new screens as well.

Electronic Arts are big. They're too big for just one venue, so they've spread their E3 appearance over two. If you happen to be in Los Angeles, pop along to the Le Merigot Hotel as well as the Barker Hangar, to check out some of these titles in person.
If you're stuck somewhere other than LA, never fear, I've got all the EA titles on display in one handy-dandy (-long) document, complete with screens, information and videos. Mmm. Just sit back and pretend you're there.

Despite announcements last week that Hellgate: London had grown bigger than anticipated and would start attracting a monthly subscription fee (drawing a pretty harsh response from gamers), it now looks like someone's jumped the gun a bit - with Namco and Flagship making a statement that no decision has been reached on the topic.
If you're interested in the game, you might like to stick around, I've got a few words on all three of the ingame classes - that's the Templar, the Cabalist, and the Hunter.
