What have the gaming public been buying this week via digital distribution platform Steam? ... Last week seemed to have a RPG theme, with Aion taking out the number one spot... again. It was followed by Champions Online, and one of the best RPGs ever made, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Left 4 Dead also managed to sell some more copies, as did Braid.
If you want to what else sold the most last week, you'll just have to check out the Steam Top Sellers for the week ending September 13th!

Dragon Age: Origins has an inarguably excellent RPG pedigree. It comes to us courtesy of BioWare, who are not only responsible for bringing the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons pen-and-paper role playing system to life in the Baldurs Gate series and Neverwinter Nights, but whose own developed role playing systems form the backbone of titles like Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. With that kind of experience behind them, you can be sure that the Dragon Age: Origins mechanics are going to be solid, but in case you were in doubt, confirmation comes today with the announcement of the upcoming publication of a pen-and-paper edition of the game's system.

It's been quite a while since we last took a look at IL-2: Birds of Prey, the first console release in the lauded IL-2 series of flight combat simulators. One of the series' key features is its stunning visuals, but publishers 505 Games have been kind enough to lets us know that the game's audio will be crafted to match. In fact, they're so enthusiastic about the game's sound that they've enlisted actor Joss Ackland to provide dramatic narration, and composer Jeremy Soule for an exclusive, region-specific soundtrack.

The end of the year is typically the time for roundups and recaps, summing up the year past - but sometimes, it takes a little while longer to compile all the information, bumping the news to the new year. This is the case with the official Xbox 360 Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008 list, which has just been announced.
We have here the list of both the the Original Xbox and Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (both lists based on unique users), as well as the Top Arcade Titles (based on full versions purchased). Not sure if there's any real surprises here (hello, Halo), but it is interesting to note the number of demos in the list that are not accompanied by the full game.

Psssst. Did you know BioWare Corp and LucasArts are developing a Knights of the Old Republic MMOG? Oh, you heard about ‘that one’ already. What some say is one of the worst kept secrets in game development history is likely to be announced at an upcoming event on October 21st, so mark your calendars for October 22nd.
The snazzy invites sent to select media outlets display “The wait is over” on the front and “The official unveiling of the game that’s been rumored about for years” on the back. Hah, so much for keeping the title shrouded in mystery.

For many days during this year, I’ve often sat and pondered the changes that have occurred in our industry since I first started gaming. Industry leaders change, talent moves around, new series rise to prominence and sometimes fall from grace after overexposure. New technology is often the catalyst of many such changes; look at what the rise of the HD consoles has done to the Japanese development scene. With the first rumblings this week about the successors to the Wii and PlayStation 3, I can’t help but wonder what the next formats will offer, and what direction the industry will take.
This week The Warp Pipe looks back on how LucasArts transformed itself from one of the most innovative developers in the industry to the unfortunate place it is today.

This will be a post full of acronyms, so I'll give you a bit of a cheat sheet to get you started:
KoTOR is Knights of the Old Republic, a title based on the Star Wars universe.
MMO is Massively Multiplayer Online, as it relates to games that a lot of people can play online at once, in a persistent world.
EA is Electronic Arts, a video game publisher.
A-OK is a saying, derived from "Okay" and used in diving, meaning "Everything's good, we can proceed".
So: KoTOR MMO by EA is A-OK!
(To translate - EA has announced that BioWare is currently working on the next version of Knights of the Old Republic, and that it will contain a massively multiplayer online component.)

It's just been one of those weeks here at The Warp Pipe, where it was almost impossible to sit down and actually work. For some unknown reason, LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy sank its teeth into me, and wouldn't let go until I completely finished everything in the game. It's the first platformer/action hybrid that I've got 100% in for a couple of years, so it's left me feeling pretty good. It also helped wash out the awful aftertaste left by Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal. While I mourn the loss of animation pioneers like Chuck Jones, Tex Avery and Friz Freleng, I'm glad they're not alive to see what Warner Bros. has done to their creations.
This week, we're going to dish up another helping of random facts, thoughts and opinions about the game industry, revisit a rather good Looney Tunes game called Desert Demolition and uncover the awesomeness that is God Hand.

I know that all you smug console folks have already experienced the greatness of Mass Effect, but I am obliged to let you continue your smugness with some slightly disappointing news for those of us who are waiting for the PC version.
Mass Effect has had its release date pushed back a tiny bit in order to allow for further testing and a tiny little bit more polish.
Don't fret though! The PC version is promised to have a revised, more intuitive interface, optimised graphics, and all those (usual) levels of support and quality that PC owners expect from games.

It seems as though Bioware have been awfully busy as of late, with the announcement yesterday of Mass Effect to be released on PC. Barely giving time for gamers to get their heads around that, it seems that a tiny bit of information we had received not too long ago has developed further. This, information; directly relating to activities in a galaxy far, far away has now had some confirmation through an EA Analyst Report, and a list of planned titles.
We previously brought you information on the announcement of an old partnership between Bioware and LucasArts, but a new Knights of the Old Republic game was not officially announced at that time. It appears that something is happening now.

Confirming some rumours that have been flying around, today LucasArts and BioWare Corp announced that they are working together to create an "interactive entertainment product". As yet, details on the product are being kept under wraps, but it promises to "push the boundaries" of the gaming market, utilising the strengths of both companies in order to create an innovative, high-quality experience.
Consider, for a moment, the well-known project that these two produced together in the past...

You may have heard the rumours, but it is my duty to inform you that yes - Electronic Arts has acquired VG Holding Corp., who owns both BioWare and Pandemic Studios.
Both of these companies have created some of the best-quality games in the industry (BioWare bringing NeverWinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, as well as Pandemic's Destroy All Humans!, Full Spectrum Warrior and Dark Reign 2) which will give EA a much-needed boost in the areas of action, adventure and role-playing games.
