Weekly Digest - 24/08/2009
Each week, we collate the most popular stories that we published over the past seven days, plus a lineup of the most downloaded files added in the same timeframe. That way, in case you missed something, you can catch up in one helpful little spot, every Monday morning.

Last week, people who didn't make it to the Brisbane meet up wanted to know everything that happened. While that really wasn't gaming news, (the announcement of the PlayStation 3 slim took that honour), news from BlizzCon also proved to be extremely popular. Other popular news involved a certain upcoming MMO being given "best seller status", and a teaser trailer for another MMO (incidentally, from the same company) capturing the attention of hundreds of gamers.

[BlizzCon 09] Day 2: What we got up to at BlizzCon 2009
Well, BlizzCon is over for another year, and while it came in with a pop of pyrotechnics, it's gone out with a roar, thanks to the one and only Ozzy Osbourne (the only mortal to successfully challenge Arthas for the title of Prince of Darkness). My ears are still ringing, but I'm here to let you know just what we got up to during Day 2 of this celebration of all things Blizzard.

To summarise briefly: we caught up with the pro-gaming situation, watched StarCraft exhibition matches, checked out the new World of Warcraft magazine, spent a bit of time in the retro arcade... and generally wandered aimlessly through the four halls of the Convention Center, along with 20,000 other gamers.

[BlizzCon 09] Day 1: What we got up to at BlizzCon 2009
As UgLyPuNk mentioned earlier today, we are indeed over here in California for BlizzCon 2009. Games On Net spent the day on the show floor, running around and checking out the various cosplayers, looking at the artwork on display, guessing which attendees are actually pro-gamers, and generally having a bit of a great time.

In case you've been enjoying your time under that rock, BlizzCon is an almost-annual celebration of all things Blizzard, taking elements from their three major gaming franchises, StarCraft, Diablo and Warcraft (of course, not ignoring World of Warcraft). It's two days, 20,000 people, a convention center and a lot of fun.

Last week, everyone wanted to know about the new Left 4 Dead downloadable content, which is due for release in September. Also of note, in what was a fairly slow news week was the top selling titles on Steam.

With no confirmed release date, Blizzard's upcoming RTS, Starcraft II made headlines again, with news last week suggesting that the game will find its way to or computers in the first half of the year. Finally, the ever popular Serious Sam made news again, with some new screenshots of the HD remake proving to be very popular.

Warcraft 3 gets patched to 1.24a
Blizzard have released an update for Warcraft III. The update comes in a variety of flavours, with an incremental and full patch available for both the vanilla Warcraft III (Reign of Chaos) - and its expansion pack, The Frozen Throne.

The patch makes a few fixes to the game's editor, which stomps on a bunch of unsavoury types that would use exploits online, while also making a few changes to the game's editor that fixes "unsafe" type casting that could result in player-generated maps being buggy.

If you've got the normal version of Warcraft III - without the expansion pack, and have no patches installed, or (a version earlier than 1.23a) you can download the Full patch to make sure you've got the latest version of the game. If you've got 1.23a installed, you can download the much smaller incremental patch.

The Warp Pipe - 02/08/09
Video game-to-movie adaptations have always been pretty terrible, outside of one or two which make the cut as mindless popcorn flicks. Everybody knows it, so there’s no need to dwell on that fact. We know what makes these movies bad – departure from the source material, low production values and horrible talent both on and off the screen. In spite of this, many games, regardless of their suitability, are being optioned for film production.

This week, The Warp Pipe will look at a couple of video game film projects that are currently in the pipeline.

[BlizzCon 09] BlizzCon Virtual Tickets available online
As we've reported previously, BlizzCon 2009 sold out in record time. But! It's okay if you missed out (or if you can't get to Anaheim for August 21-22), you can still celebrate all things to do with Blizzard (that means StarCraft, WarCraft, WoW, Diablo and all associated other bits and pieces) from the comfort of your own home.

While we have received official word that there will not be a Pay-Per-View television partner this year for Australians (sorry guys!), you can still grab your "Virtual Ticket" and watch more than 18 hours of live coverage thanks to the DirecTV streaming coverage. And yes - you do get your own Grunty (the Murloc Marine!) just for being there.

Who'dathunk, last week, that we'd be celebrating the news that Sam Raimi had been announced as the director of the Warcraft movie? Gamers are all still fascinated by what's been selling (or not) on Steam, and by the 15-minute walkthrough of Mafia 2, narrated by Denby Grace. We also got information that Episodes from Liberty City will be released in October, just after Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

It was a week packed with more than a few interesting bits and pieces - why not take the time to trip down Memory Lane?

Warcraft: The Movie - Sam Raimi confirmed as director
It's been a very (very) long time since we've heard anything about the planned Warcraft movie (by my count, nobody's said much since BlizzCon 2007)- but Blizzard are breaking their silence with some pretty exciting news.

The first big name has now been officially attached to the project with Sam Raimi signing on as director. He's perhaps best known recently for directing the Spider-Man trilogy, but older film buffs will remember him fondly as the writer and director of cult classic The Evil Dead. It'll be interesting to see what he brings to Azeroth!

Riot Games secures ex-Blizzard staff
About this time last year, a relatively new development studio named Riot Games that hardly anyone had heard of managed to snaffle about US $7 million in funding. The gaming world looked on with interest, mainly to see if the CEO's would do a midnight flit, and then promptly forgot all about it (as is our wont) until the announcement of the upcoming League of Legends. Since about a hundred games are announced each week, we didn't pay much attention then, either - but the news that a couple of ex-Blizzard employees have joined the flock is pricking my interest.

Activision Blizzard will break quarterly earning projections
Activision Blizzard laughs in the face of the economic crisis and bulldoze their expectations for this quarter. So many hundreds of millions that bag space is becoming an issue. CEO Robert Kotick took the time to announce today that the company will outdo its US $860 million net revenue target for the quarter.

No new estimates were given, but the shattered expectations stem from the phenomenal software sales from the reigning titans: World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and the numerous Guitar Hero iterations. Kotick took the spotlight to stop stuffing his pockets with monies and pitch Activizzard's upcoming lineup.

A common fixture of Easter Sunday for many children is the Easter Egg Hunt, a concept which stretches over into the world of video games, where instead of chocolatey goodness, game developers hide little secrets, amusing anecdotes and references to past products.

This week, The Warp Pipe will look at a couple of our favourite video game Easter Eggs.

The fine folk over at Blizzard Entertainment have unveiled the latest iteration of Battle.net, which allows World of Warcraft account holders and other Blizzard customers to access their World of Warcraft accounts, the WoW Armoury, forums, and other Blizzard services through the use of a single set of log-in details.

The new Battle.Net accounts are described as "an evolution" of existing Blizzard accounts, with all Blizzard account holders now Battle.Net account holders. Details regarding this should have been emailed to users who are affected. At the present time, the changes only apply to North American (which, by extension, affects Australian accounts), with the changes expected to roll out to European and Korean users in the near future.

Blizzard have released a new patch for Warcraft 3. The patch moves the game from 1.22a to 1.23a, and is available for those with Reign of Chaos and those who own the Frozen Throne expansion.

The (tiny) patch (which only weighs in at 1.68MB) addresses an exploit that would allow a modified custom map to be played by one side of a multiplayer match (allowing them to gain advantages in play) - while also "switching on" on a new banner-ad system in Battle.net.

Warcraft III gets timely new 1.22a update
Just to prove that they aren't only focussing on their new titles, Blizzard also took this week to release a new patch for Warcraft III. Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational - Paris 2008 - StarCraft II Evolving Design
That's enough (for now) about Diablo III. It's now time to concentrate on Blizzard's other highly-anticipated upcoming release, the one announced at last year's Worldwide Invitational in Korea.

Executive Vice President Rob Pardo takes the stage and settles in to explain a few things about StarCraft II. Sounds like the guys behind the scenes are itching to re-design the StarCraft idea from the ground up, but still keeping the pace and feeling that's attached to the franchise.

Part of the way they're doing this is to introduce new units, taking that as an opportunity to make the differences within the races as distinct as possible. Each of the three races - Zerg, Protoss and Terran - are very different, and each new unit emphasises the distinctions, as well as obviously bringing in new strategies, and different ways to utilise otherwise familiar aspects of the game.

Apple to enter gaming market?
Games are seriously big business these days. With the recent launch of Microsoft's Games for Windows program, in addition to an expanding console, mobile and handheld market - commercially, gaming is huge. Only a few years ago did we see Microsoft break into the console market with their release of the Xbox, which competed with Sony's Playstation 2, and the Nintendo Gamecube. Though at the time a foreigner to the console market, Microsoft have done pretty well for themselves in the console market since then.

This brings to light the following question - what comes next? Well, it seems that perhaps Apple might be attempting to break into the gaming market soon, having recently upgraded their trademark with some new information which could potentially mean that we could soon be seeing Apple hand held gaming devices - or even perhaps a console.
