It also has a bit where a dude gets eaten by a shark. Any trailer with sharks in gets the thumbs up from me! Now, apparently ol’ Eddie used to work for a King, presumably of England. But it sounds like he got fed up with that and went rogue, pillaging and plundering and generally doing whatever the hell he wants. Good on him, I guess.

We’re introduced to his crew in a vague and general way, but mostly there’s just lots of images of Kenway jumping off buildings directly into the spines of his enemies. Maybe you’ve seen this before – it’s called Assassin’s Creed: Any of the Other Ones. Anyway, it looks pretty and if it’s anything like the ship battles of what is colloquially known as Ass Creed 3, it should be a lot of fun.

Ass Creed 4 is due for release on October 31, and already has a metric butt-tonne of junk for preordering and/or special editions which you can find at your local retailer.

For those that haven’t, the gist is to essentially reveal how hyper-sexualised female characters in comic books are by replacing images of them with their male counterparts, usually Clint Barton, in the same position. So you might end up with something like this. Have a look around while you’re there, there are some real doozies.

Earlier today, an email came to The Hawkeye Initiative from the offices of Meteor Entertainment, makers of free-to-play mech-shooter, Hawken. Inside was a tale most uplifting, about gender equality in the office. Head over here for the full story, but I will summarise below.

It seems that Meteor CEO Mark Long was a huge fan of this poster (which in any other office would be deemed inappropriate) and had it blown up and hung on the outward facing wall of his office. The emailer swallowed her indignation, gritted her teeth, and came up with a cunning plan.

Borrowing the talents of fellow Meteor-ite Sam Kirk, they devised an alternative male Brosie, blew him up to poster size, framed him and at 7:30am on April 1st, replaced the offending poster with her new counterpart.

Long enters. The entire office hears an explosive, “What the hell is this?!” and then… silence. For more than half an hour. The anonymous emailer began to worry about her future at the company, until finally Long approached her.

“That was a brilliant prank,” he said. “You called me on exactly the bullshit I need to be called on. I put up pictures of half-naked girls around the office all the time and I never think about it. I’m taking you and Sam to lunch. And after that, we’re going to hang both prints, side by side.”

The ending is what really makes it for me. It’s not Mark Long grunting and saying, “Hmph, I see what you’re saying” and continuing to do it anyway. It’s his eyes really being opened, being made aware that this is a problem and working to make a better future for everyone.

Who would you like to see in the pilot’s seat of a Mass Effect spin-off? After all, there is a pretty big cast of characters to choose from. Sitting down with OXM, the dev team has a chat about who they’d like to see in the starring role of any spin-off action.

“There’s so much that could be told in the Mass Effect universe,” said Casey Hudson. “It’d be cool to do something completely unrelated to the larger storyline, like a story about a private investigator on the Citadel. Or maybe something detailing Garrus’ time in C-Sec.”

“While being one of Shepard’s most loyal friends, Garrus has also had some of the most driven personal goals,” added Dusty Everman. “He’s a hero in his own right, as Archangel and beyond. Who wouldn’t want to see the further adventures of the bold, charming Garrus Valkarian (there’s a lot of guns out there to calibrate).”

Preston Watamaniuk thinks “a game centred on brutal Krogan combat with more of a melee focus could be pretty exciting.” Personally, I would love to play a Mass Effect game as a Krogan. Throw in a romance subplot with Wrex and I’ll buy the super-mega special edition, thank you very much.

Mac Walters, though, is hard-pressed to make a decision. “Aria. The Illusive Man. Kai Leng. Any henchman. The list goes on. I think most of them could have successful spin-offs of their own in some fashion.”

It’s unclear from the interview whether the team are talking possible starring roles for Mass Effect 4, or if they are riffing ideas about a possible standalone spin-off. It seems like it’s probably speculation at this point, but that doesn’t make the whole thought exercise any less fun. Which one of your favourite characters would make a good spin-off? Maybe some sort of Facebook game where you play a Keeper that wanders around the Citadel performing maintenance! Thrilling.

First published in 1999, the cyberpunk title was one of the first games to successfully blend FPS and RPG elements as well as a hefty dash of survival horror.

The game is yet to receive any achievements on Steam, but does have full German-language audio, which is handy if that happens to be your particular tasche.

Before it was released on GOG.com in February it was the most requested game and at only $10 on Steam, it promises to be a popular title over there too. In fact, it is currently 30% off until May 18, making it only $7.99. So if you’re going to pick this one up, now seems like a good time!

James went back and played through the game again to see how it held up — see his thoughts here.

As such, some of the developers have sat down and had a bit of a reminisce about the games — the most interesting being what they left out.

Many of the staff here at GON were excited when some multiplayer DLC added some new playable races to the game, many of us hoping some of the more sidelined races might finally make an appearance. Apparently, we weren’t far off the mark, the team considering adding Elcor and Hanar characters to the single player campaign, before cutting them in order to spend the considerable time and money investment they represented adding more depth and polish to the existing game.

Remember the time in Mass Effect 2 when you briefly take control of Joker as he tries to avoid capture by the Collectors? Apparently there were more of these sequences planned, such as taking control of a colonist on Horizon during the Collector attack, and taking control of a Quarian scientist before Tali’s loyalty mission. Unfortunately, these were again scrapped in favour of putting the energy into other places.

The next entry in the Mass Effect saga promises to offer a different perspective on the universe. Hopefully that means that some of these ideas that needed to be scrapped at this point might make it into future games. What do you think? Which Mass Effect race would you like to see in the future? Or would you rather it stayed human/biped centric? Let us know.

Source: OXM, thanks Stefan!

Somebody had described it to me as “the poor man’s Mass Effect”, and having enjoyed Mass Effect as much as I did, I jumped at the idea.

If you’ve heard that as well, forget it. You will have a better time.

Frankly, I get a much greater Fallout vibe from Wars: Mar Logs, and it’s not just the aesthetic. Vaguely diesel-punky in appearance, the game — believe it or not — takes place on a war-torn Mars. Different factions are duking it out for control of Mars’ resources and you are caught in the middle, in the POW camp of one faction.

I say ‘you’, but I really mean one of two characters whose roles you play. Confused? Let me explain. You run around, level up and make decisions as one Temperance, or Roy as he prefers to be called (or Space Elvis as I’ve taken to calling him). But his past is relatively unknown because the story, the cutscenes, the journal entries are all from the point of view of Innocence, Roy’s companion. It’s weird, and it threw me for a bit.

Also, Lars: War Dogs has sort of a virtue-name thing going on, if you haven’t noticed already. Mostly they appear to be ironic: Innocence for example is still young and naive, but has been to the front lines and has seen and done horrible things in the name of war (I also had a great time shouting, “Oh God, Innocence is DEAD!” every time he died).

There’s a lot to love about War: Lars Mog. The combat, for example, is interesting with equal parts strategy and button-mashing. On one hand, you’ll be mashing the buttons as fast as you can to get a hit. On the other, though, there are three buttons for melee, depending on if you want to break through someone blocking, say, or to keep an enemy on their toes. And when you’re fighting martian dogs, they can only take damage from behind — so they’ll come right at you, but you’re constantly evading, trying to get behind them.

It’s an interesting mix and it’s just challenging enough to keep you wondering: “Can I take this guy?”, and making it feel like a victory if you do. Having said that, there are some fiddly, annoying parts to the combat — so sometimes when you die it will be infuriating because COME ON, WHY DIDN’T THAT HEALTH INJECTION WORK ARGGGHH

When you’re dying a lot though, it’s probably not the games’ fault. It’s probably time to upgrade your gear!

I didn’t notice this feature for an embarrassingly long time, but in a way that was sort of a blessing. In your travels around Mars you’ll find yourself hoarding quite a collection of space-junk, metal, chemical components, that sort of thing. When you find yourself with a weapon or armour with upgrade slots, you can use this junk to upgrade your things, for example, adding a sheet of metal to your clothes to protect yourself, or a spiky head of nails to your iron bar to deal some more damage.

For certain optional quests, War Togs doesn’t take the usual RPG approach where you either ignore a quest or take it and eventually succeed — you can actually fail them if you’re careless

There is a substance called “serum”, which up to the point I’ve played, hasn’t really been explained. It’s some sort of biological substance — you can take it from fallen enemies, resulting in their deaths — but it’s also used as a currency, as well as for the creation of health injections. So you can use it to buy things, weapons, armour, health injections, but in a pinch you can use a lot more of it to make yourself a couple of injections to tide you over.

Related to this is your reputation. You gain reputation by generally being a good guy, doing quests in a nice way, and saying nice things. A great way to lose reputation quickly is to murder people for their Adam serum.

I enjoyed the questing system as well. For certain optional quests, War Togs doesn’t take the usual RPG approach where you either ignore a quest or take it and eventually succeed — you can actually fail them if you’re careless. Without too many spoilers, while trying to escape the POW camp, I had an optional quest to convince one of the more friendly guards who was fed up with the place to come along. The choice of the wrong dialogue option meant he wouldn’t be coming with us, along with all the changes to the story that that could mean.

It also opened up a completely different quest to poison him slightly to get him sent home. I’m a good dude like that.

I’ve focussed heavily on the good parts of this game. It took me awhile to warm to it, starting a bit slow and such, but in general I truly enjoyed what I played and really, the only negative aspects I came up with are fairly trivial. Things like the occasional spelling error, some fairly wooden voice acting and pretty dated visuals might mean more to you than an interesting storyline, and if that’s your bag, maybe this isn’t the game for you. It also has one of the worst cases of Invisible Wall Syndrome I’ve ever come across, and that can get pretty infuriating.

There’s a lot to love about Mars: War Logs: the setting, the combat, the way quests and conversation work. Unfortunately, a lot of it is hidden behind some questionable voice acting, dated visuals and poor animation.

If you’re looking for a solid sci-fi RPG though, with some really interesting elements, and can get past these fairly superficial obstacles, I would definitely give this one a shot. It’s not as fancy as your latest triple-A game, but hey, it’s also only twenny bux on Steam.

Good:

Interesting setting

Divergent, dynamically-changing quests

Combat is generally satisfying

Great value for the price

Bad:

Voice acting is mostly poor

Overall dated look

Stiff animations

Mars: War Logs is $19.99 on Steam. This review copy was provided by the publisher.

It’s gritty, it’s dark, it’s big guns and augments and mean streets. But it’s more than just an aesthetic, says Cyberpunk 2020 creator Mike Pondsmith. It’s a philosophy — a subtle one — about corruption and decay as well as ambiguity and individualism. It’s been done in video games before, but not well. As such, Pondsmith was nervous about letting anyone take another crack at it.

“At the beginning he was really scared. You could see that on his face,” CD Projekt RED game director, Mateusz Kanik said, when Pondsmith came to their Poland office to discuss Cyberpunk 2077. “There have been attempts at Cyberpunk games in the past and each of them was bad, and he was scared it would be the same again. But he came to us at the beginning and met the team, and we talked about vision, ideas, how we want to approach this adaptation of his work – and when he left he was extremely happy about it.”

But that’s not all the word ‘cyberpunk’ means to the team. Sure, they’ve got the ‘cyber’ part – but what about the ‘punk’?

“There are lots of cyber games around, but there’s not a lot of punk in those games,” Mateusz says, “We want to put more punk into ours. We do not want to make a dark and hopeless world. We are not doing Blade Runner. It will be full of rock and roll. It’s more like a Tarantino approach.”

This is still just scratching the surface, though.

“First of all it will be an RPG, so that means you create the story. In Syndicate and other shooters you can do no such thing,” says creative director Sebastian Stepien. “The other thing is that you will have the chance to create your character’s personality. This is very, very important. The style and mood and atmosphere of this world, what you do at the bar, what do you drink, how you react with other people, what dialogue you choose — all these things let us keep the Cyberpunk atmosphere all the time.”

“We will have several features that allow you to create your [visual] style, and your style will affect gameplay, storyline and relationships between characters. It’s about telling story via what happens, not cutscenes or other features,” Mateusz added. “To do that we need to create a totally new unique dialogue system – we’re doing that right now, it should be awesome.”

Sounds great, but it’ll all take time. So much time, in fact, that there’s basically no chance that we’ll be seeing it before 2015. So try to forget all that amazing stuff I wast just talking about.

No, not me. A little before my time. But do you? Well, you’ll be pleased to hear, then, that Ragnarok Online 2 is currently in open beta.

Due for official release in about 11 hours, the anime-esque MMO is making its way to Steam and, unlike the original, is fully rendered in 3D. If you feel your nostalgia glands swelling, don’t worry, you won’t be the only one. But how much are you willing to fork out on nostalgia alone? How does nothing sound? Ragnarok Online 2 will be free-to-play, and judging from the lack of pre-order button, free-to-download too! (But don’t quote me on that, I guess.)

So what do you think, sports racers?! Will you be heading back into Midgard for some oldschool-cum-newschool fun? Or maybe if you’ve been playing MMOs for 10 years and you’re just over them now. Let us know in the comments!

Today, that something is Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, the tongue-in-cheek 80s action film that is Far Cry 3‘s standalone spinoff that launches tomorrow.

Everyone’s favourite Space Marine, Michael Biehn (Hicks, of Aliens fame) voices Sergeant Rex Power Colt, a cyborg commando on a mission to stop an army of dragons that shoot lasers from their eyes, metal sharks and other cyborg-type things. If you like your cheesy 80′s action flicks, Blood Dragon may just be for you, with a designated button for flipping off enemies and wildlife alike, as well as altered physics so you can spray bullets wildly and still miss most of the time!

I’ll reiterate that it is standalone, so if for some reason you didn’t already own Far Cry 3, you can still download and play this.

While a huge amount of money, you wouldn’t be blamed for feeling a pang of disappointment that we never made that final stretch goal of $4.5 million, adding a player stronghold and more reactive facets to the game.

Well, don’t put your disappointment pants on just yet! Line producer Thomas Beekers has come forward to explain that, due to some awesome and fortuitous circumstances, the final goal has, in fact, been reached.

“Our percentage of dropped pledges was way below our estimates, proving yet again that you guys rock! As you may recall, our Lead Tormenter Brian Fargo and superfan Steven Dengler matched pledges between $1M and $3M, adding a total of $200K,” he said. “That money was set aside primarily against failed pledges, but because of your dedication, we can apply enough of it toward our budget – combined with the PayPal totals – so as to have reached $4.5 million.”

“Which means? We made it! Because you guys are so awesome (and because Fargo and Dengler are so awesome) we can implement every single one of our stretch goals, including not just the player “stronghold” but also our ideas for expanded reactivity, length and depth, pursuing some of our crazier ideas concerning choice and consequence.”

A good nine months, in fact, since the SDCC trailer come out. Now, sort of suddenly, I can tell you exactly when you’ll be able to play it.

It has been announced today that Australians will be able to pick up the title as of the 26th of June, which is a day after the North American release (boo) but several days before the European release on the 28th (yay?).

More important, though, is the announcement that the Merc with Several Gibbering Mouths will be getting a PC release as well.

So what do you think, faithful readers? Will you be picking this one up? Daniel Way is on board for writing, and I’m reading a lot of the older-school ‘Pool fans think he’s a little too “LOL Random”. But will that affect your video gaming or are you happy to just have a little wacky fun with the wise-crackin’, fourth-wall breakin’ sass pot? Let us know in the comments.

According to the LinkedIn profile of a 2K senior artist, of late he’s been working on “providing animation and R&D for a new character” in Bioshock: Infinite‘s DLC.

The relevant information on the artist’s profile has since been removed, which in Internet terms is almost as good as slapping it with a big ol’ rubber stamp that says “rumour confirmed”. It hasn’t been confirmed, however and we’ll probably hear more as details about the story DLC begin to emerge.

In the meantime though, speculation: go! Who or what do you think could be our new companion? This reporter hopes desperately that it might be a little pint-sized Songbird, but that seems less than likely. A handyman? A patriot? A Slate prequel? The possibilities are, dare I say, infinite.

So here at games.on.net, we decided — why not both?

While we wait for it to encode with our GONplayer, here’s an embedded version from our YouTube mirror. You can also download it in HD from our file library.

Good:

Very impressive graphics and great PC support

New Lara is down-to-earth and more genuine

A clever, respectful remake

Well-written plot and strong characters

Bad:

Entirely too many (poorly explained) quick-time events

Only about 10-15 hours of gameplay, not much replay value

Lara’s transition into hardened warrior isn’t so believable

Our apologies if you’ve been waiting on the review — PC code didn’t unlock before launch, so we weren’t able to get our review up until now. Thanks!

Games.on.net have just announced that we are deploying a number of servers for some older classic games. These servers are here to stay and will never be shut down!

These public servers will run as is, with little to no customisation. So what games are to be catered for? Well, let’s look at the list. We’ve got the original Call of Duty, as well as Call of Duty 2, Unreal Tournament and Unreal Tournament 2004 and Quake 3. What a list!

So next time you have a LAN with a few friends, fire up some old classics. The servers will be rolled out over the next few weeks and as they’re public servers, if you could let us know when they’re down or broken or otherwise not working, that’d be great. Check out the forum thread for more info.

Really, as we approach the launch of Crysis 3 on the 21st of this month, the trailers are not getting any more imaginative. Prophet uses stealth and/or a bow and/or a gun to take out various bad guys doing things that Prophet doesn’t want them to do.

Well, HERE BE SPOILERS.

Marcin Blacha and Borys Pugacz Muraszkiewicz, writers on Wild Hunt have sat down with Game Informer to have a chat about what the game will entail, storywise. It will be a personal story, they said, less of a world-changing political saga. Geralt will be searching for ‘the love of his life’, who has been missing in previous games, along with his memory. The latter having been restored, it’s time to go looking for the former.

If you haven’t played The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, I probably wouldn’t watch the video over at Game Informer – there are some spoilers. If you have, though, and aren’t afraid of some very mild spoilers for the next installment, you should head over there and check it out.

Remember when 38 Studios closed down and then most of their staff were picked up by Epic Games to form an ‘Impossible Studio’? It seemed like the end of a painful saga for the Big Huge Games team. Well, unfortunately their troubles aren’t over yet. The entire team has just been fired all over again. Epic founder Tim Sweeney had this to say:

“We’re closing Impossible Studios. When former members of Big Huge Games approached Epic last year, we saw the opportunity to help a great group of people while putting them to work on a project that needed a team. It was a bold initiative and the Impossible folks made a gallant effort, but ultimately it wasn’t working out for Epic.”

“In addition to providing Impossible Studios employees with 3 months of severance pay, we’ll be giving the team the opportunity to form a new company with the Impossible Studios name and the awesome Impossibear logo. This means that Infinity Blade: Dungeons is now on hold as we figure out the future of the project.”

Apparently Ken Levine of Irrational Studios has shown interest in recruiting some of the Impossible staff, linking to the Irrational hiring page on Facebook and saying that he is “a huge fan of everything Big Huge ever did.”

You’re sick of the Australia Tax, I’m sick of the Australia Tax, we’re all sick of the Australia Tax. Now, we’re finally going to get some answers!

Major tech players Apple, Microsoft and Adobe have been served with a summons (I refuse to even type the word ‘summonsed’) to appear before the committee handling the IT price inquiry on March 22 in Canberra. Having refused to appear before the inquiry committee on request, they now face legal ramifications if they don’t send representatives to explain themselves in front of Parliament.

Ed Husic, Australia’s most vocal opponent of the IT pricing discrepancy is pleased to hear the groups will be held accountable but says the government shouldn’t have needed to step in.

“These firms should have cooperated and been prepared to be more open and transparent about their pricing approaches,” he said. “Adobe, Apple and Microsoft are just a few firms that have continually defied the public’s call for answers and refused to appear before the IT Pricing Inquiry.”

“While television and computer prices fell 14 per cent according the to the latest Consumer Price Index Figures, there’s still a long way to go – with some estimates suggesting that Australian prices are up to 60 per cent higher than the US.”

“Given the widespread use of IT across businesses and the community, the prices paid for hardware and software can have a major commercial and economic impact. Getting downward movement on IT prices and easing the bite of price discrimination should be an important micro-economic priority – so I’m looking forward to hearing from these firms about their pricing approaches.”

Or maybe you’ve already tried your hand at writing and found that you enjoyed it. Well, how would you like to see your own writing on the small screen?

Dean “Rocket” Hall announced today via Twitter that he’d like to have Skyrim-style books scattered about the environment in the standalone Day Z.

The requirements are fairly open at the moment. He doesn’t even necessarily want you to write in English, if you’d prefer not to. What he does want though, is lots of pre-war, pre-zombie stuff. While there are bound to be plenty of, “I can hear the drums in the deep, they [zombies, in this case] are coming…” stories, Hall would like to see some stuff left over from when the world was a kinder place. “Normal short stories, any genre” he said.

Having said that, there were then tens of millions of tweets directed at Mr Rocket looking for clarification, so he has said that he will put down some formal guidelines for your submissions in the very near future. Until then, get your writing pants on!

It has been revealed today that Fox International Productions are planning to make another Hitman movie, this time a reboot. The new film, which will be called Agent 47 will star Paul Walker of Fast and the Furious fame as the titular anti-hero.

When I heard Paul Walker was to play Agent 47, I immediately disagreed with their casting choice. Then I saw images like the one to the right — you know, collared shirt, holding a gun — and decided that perhaps he wouldn’t be so bad. He could probably stand to bulk up a little, but he will be shaving his head for the part.

The previous Hitman film was a commercial success, grossing $100 million worldwide, even if the critics tended to hate it. The reboot will be written by the writers behind A Good Day to Die Hard, Skip Woods and Michael Finch, and will be directed by Aleksander Bach, a director that is highly regarded but has only made commercials so far. This will be his feature film debut.

So what do you think, punters? You are the target audience after all! What did you think of the first Hitman movie? A hit or a miss? Would you rather see a sequel than a reboot? Or do you feel that a reboot is the right idea because man, did that suck? Either way, would you rather see someone else play 47, or are you open to the idea of young Mr Walker? Do let us know!

While you can’t access the glitch until Chapter 8 of the game, it is ridiculously easy to accomplish, simply involving walking in and out of a room. How did QA miss that?

The video below has been up for two days already, so there’s no telling when EA will get around to patching this glitch out. So if this is your thing, you should check out the helpful video below.

The Sherlock Holmes games developed by Frogwares have a bit of a reputation. They aren’t bad, per se. Just, well, creepy. But as far as modern adventure games go, they’re pretty good.

There’s also new title being made at the moment by the name of Crimes & Punishment: Sherlock Holmes, that promises to bring changes to the series — not least of which will be jumping to the Unreal Engine 3. Also, rather than one over-arching mystery for Mr. Holmes to solve, there will be eight cases, ranging from “spectacular thefts” to murder most foul.

The most interesting change is the new morality system, by which Holmes has to make difficult choices and bear the consequences. It also seems as though they will be nuanced, grey area choices, rather than “simply enforcing justice by the book”, which let’s face it, Holmes has never really been known for anyway.

“Each case offers real freedom to players, who will have to make important moral choices instead of simply enforcing justice by the book,” reads the official description. “All decisions have an influence in the game and affect your character’s reputation in addition to having realistic, sometimes unexpected, consequences. You will have to bear the weight of your choices, as Crimes and Punishments offers an exciting system of actions/consequences that forces players to think before acting by giving true depth to every decision they make.”
