A Rockin' Mod Selection: Eternal Silence 2, Iron Grip, Synergy, Natural Selection
Sometimes, the original game is pretty good, but you and a bunch of mates reckon you know a way to make it better. It so happens that this weekend has brought a big pile of "made-better" games (I hear they're called "mods", these days), and I've polished 'em all up and presented them nicely to you.

We have, in alphabetical order: Eternal Silence 2, Iron Grip: The Oppression, and Synergy for Half-Life 2 fans, as well as Natural Selection for the first Half-Life. Remember that you do need copies of the original games in order to play these versions.

There's something for everyone here - as long as everyone's a fan of, y'know, running around and fragging enemies. Which, I'm told, isn't far from the truth.

Eternal Silence 2 (HL2)

A massive deep space war has broken out. The United Terran Forces must subdue the Galactic Militia outburst and restore the order of the systems. Your role in Eternal Silence will be within vital strategic battles between two massive capital warships. You will need your wits, your precision, your strength, your endurance, and above all your courage to take on the fierce challenges which await you.

To play the latest version, grab the 2.3 Beta, and get goin'!
Iron Grip: The Oppression (HL2)

Iron Grip is a Total Conversion Modification for Half Life2. The game is set in the Iron Grip universe. With gameplay never seen before, this game will be the first to provide real urban guerilla-warfare by a unique combination of elements taken from both first-person-shooters and real-time-strategy games. A player can choose one of two sides in this game - Rahmos or Resistance. The Rahmos side is a real-time-strategy game played by, initially, one person. The Resistance side is represented by numerous players who play a first-person-shooter.

To play the latest version - you need the Patch 1.31 Installer. If you haven't played before, grab the 1.3 Client first.
Synergy (HL2)

Synergy is, as the name suggests, a cooperative Half-Life 2 mod. Synergy was previously known as two separate mods, "DC Coop 2" and "DevCoop". We merged and are now bringing you the best cooperative experience possible.

The main objective in Synergy, is for all players to complete the given objectives for each level; Escape, Assault, Defend, etc. You work together as a team to finish the level.

However, Synergy also supports Deathmatch and Teamplay (Combine vs. Rebels). We encourage the use of NPCs in any level, even if it's Deathmatch. We try to give the level artists, or "mappers", much more customizability than Half-Life 2 already provides. You can see the Features list for details.

The latest version of this is a 2.3 Beta as well (ooh, spooky!), which should be all you need. If you're after an incremental from 2.2, you can have this one.
Natural Selection (HL)
NS is an action-strategy game for the PC. It is a "Half-life modification", which means it is written on top of the Half-life game engine. "Mods" are a new sort of underground game development that enables small teams to create games using the technology of existing games. This means less expensive and lower risk game development, which allows experimentation and innovation. This arrangement also implies that "mods" are made as art, not for making money. When complete, Natural Selection will be released for free to all owners of Half-Life, which is required to play Natural Selection.

You want the v3.2 Client to play, and the NS 3.0 Trailer to see what all the fuss is about.
