Industry Speak: Hideo Kojima on the future of Metal Gear

Famous and respected game producers often take on an aura of super-humanity to those of us subject to their whims and flights of fancy. Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear series, is no exception, but the cinema-inspired writer and designer is now revealed as a quite relatable bloke, who sneaks camera-phone pictures of his meals at fancy restaurants and suffers Spring-time allergies.

This is the magic of Twitter - that, and digging out nuggets of information on upcoming Metal Gear titles Rising and Peace Walker.

A perusal of Kojima's English-language feed shows that the communicative producer has as much trouble keeping his messages under Twitter's 140-character limit as he has cutting his cinematic scenes to under five minutes. Clicking through will often reveal the tantalising tidbits of information hungry fans live for.

On Rising, the cross-platform title set outside the core storyline delivered in the Solid series, as opposed to Peace Walker:
"The next MGS... "RISING." this game will create new users, be developed by the new generation, a new MGS, but on the other hand, "PW" is made by Hideo Kojima, a new but classical MGS. PW is a new type of game design and experimental for future endeavors. So it is hard to say it will finish with one game..."
On Peace Walker, the first core entry in the Solid series to be released in portable format:
"PW is going to be released as a portable game, but it is a TRUE MGS game in the saga, not a spin off. Of course, we have put a lot of power into the story. It should be pretty exciting. The potential of a portable game, an innovative system that changes the nature of future MGs is what makes this a game a title to look forward too.

Our goal was to create a traditional MGS game for PSP in the beginning. How do we translate it over on the PSP...but once we started the planning the direction slowly shifted toward a "MGS that evolves on a handheld." We did not think about the low specs, moreover we decided to make a Next-Gen game on a portable device,"
On Peace Walker's deviations from previous installments:
"PW has many aspects that previous MGS titles haven't had. I was confident, but worried at the same time when each element started to develop. Then around November, these elements started linking and I started seeing the entire picture. Not only did I see this, but team members started seeing the concept develop and at that point, I remember that I felt confident And reassured about this project,"
In between these gems you'll find fascinating insight into the everyday stresses of game production, discussions of key points in the series' design ... and several pictures of Kojima's meals.
