Valve poaches key staff from Naughty Dog

For years now, the world-renowned game developer Valve Software has only developed games in-house for the PC and the Xbox 360. Titles such as the PlayStation 3 version of The Orange Box -- a collection containing Half-Life 2 and its episodic sequels, Team Fortress 2, and Portal -- have been outsourced. Valve founder Gabe Newell himself has slammed the complexities of the PS3 hardware. Back in 2007, he famously referred to Sony's advanced games console as a 'do-over.'

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think it's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted."

But times have changed. Valve recently announced that it was bringing its hugely successful Steam digital download service to the Apple Mac, and if Linkedin CVs are anything to go by, the company will soon be expanding on to the PS3 as well.

Recent hires at Valve include Vitaliy Genkin, Alex Vlachos, and Elan Ruskin, three high-ranking former employees of Naughty Dog. This is the studio behind some of the finest PlayStation games ever created: Uncharted, Jak & Daxter, and the original Crash Bandicoot.

With the eagerly-awaited Portal 2 due to be released in time for Christmas, it's shaping up to be a huge year for Valve.
