Weekly Digest - 19/10/2009
Each week, we collate the most popular stories that we published over the past seven days, plus a lineup of the most downloaded files added in the same timeframe. That way, in case you missed something, you can catch up in one helpful little spot, every Monday morning.

The most popular story last week was our Refried Modern Warfare web comic, closely followed by news yesterday that Infinity Ward have finally shafted PC gamers by opting to not support dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2. Also popular was our Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising review, which also happens to lack dedicated server support. Our interview with Bioware's Dr. Greg Zeschuk also proved to be popular, and so did our review of Research and Development, a mod for Half-Life 2.
Refried - Modern Warfare 2: Deleted Scenes

In case you haven't seen the trailer that crashed the Internet last week, Modern Warfare 2 is bringing the fight back to the Homeland. Showing Washington DC in flames, one has to wonder if Infinity Ward couldn't have chosen something a little more, you know, original? Read on for Refried's take on the war-comes-to-America announcement.

Modern Warfare 2 shock: No servers or mods for PC version!

Treachery! Call of Duty community manager Rob Bowling, also known as 'fourzerotwo', has confirmed in a podcast that the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will not support user-created mods. Worse, it will not support dedicated servers...

Co-Op Review - Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising (PC)

What better way to review a co-op game than to get two gamers to write the review together? Bennett Ring and Ben Mansill fought through the PC version of the game, focusing on the game's co-op mode and whether it's closer to ArmA2 or Call of Duty. With this game sitting somewhere between these two titles, has it chiselled out its own little niche?

Reader Interview - Dr Greg Zeschuk, BioWare

Thanks to you inquisitive lot, we had plenty of questions to ask Dr Greg Zeschuk, VP and Co-Founder of BioWare, when he visited Sydney last week. Dr Greg answered your questions about Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins, with some good news for PC gamers and mod-makers alike. With a name like Dr Greg, we were hoping for a little guidance on our rocky relationship with Dad, but sadly the conversation was rooted firmly in game-land.

The Mod Squad - Research and Development

Welcome to this week's Mod Squad, where we expose the dark and secret world of modding. It's a place where experimentation and originality are key, and this week's game has both of these in spades. Research and Development is a Half Life 2 puzzler that will test even the smartest geek - if you thought Portal was challenging, you ain't seen nothin'!

Borderlands Four-Pack discount deal

Borderlands: one of the most technically innovative and artistically daring games of the year. Yet while perfectly satisfying when played solo, this fusion of RPG loot-grinding and FPS face-melting has been designed to reach its true potential in co-op, with up to four players simultaneously tearing into the freakish Mad Max mutants of planet Pandora. To that end, Gearbox and Steam have a special offer going, in which you can buy four digital download copies of Borderlands for the price of three...

L4D2 Boycott Group closes doors

It is the end of an era! A short era, but nevertheless. The Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott Group has announced its retirement, citing both Valve's positive response to the group original demands, and an influx of new membership with an agenda wide of the original manifesto's mark. The organisation has as its heart a Steam Community Group, which will be closed on October 22nd, leaving all 41,000 members bereft of space in which to air their anxieties over the looming sequel.

Retro Roadtest: Jagged Alliance

Welcome to Retro Roadtest, where we dust off the beloved classics of ye olden days, to investigate just how well they've aged. We’ll also test how easy it is to get these cobweb-infested lines of code to run on today’s supercomputers. This week Steve straps on his bandoleer, sharpens his combat knife and locks and loads the classic tactical strategy game, Jagged Alliance. Does this mercenary still have what it takes to save the world, or should it be gently wheeled into the nearest retirement village?

Economical Gamer's Bargain Bin - Uncharted 2/Brutal Legend Edition

Each week, the lads at Economical Gamer find the best Australian gaming bargains. They trawl the 'Net, hit the stores and even read those catalogues the rest of us line our kitty litter trays with, all to find the cheapest prices on the hottest games. This week they track down cheap deals on two of the year's biggest games, Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend. How does the Collector's Edition of UC2 sound, for less than sixty bucks?

Mass Effect 2 sparks pre-order dilemma

Electronic Arts has stated that certain in-game items in Mass Effect 2 will be available exclusively to those who pre-order the game from certain 'retail partners.' The goodies unlocked with your pre-order activation code will vary depending on which 'retail partner' you buy from, and thus gamers will face a dilemma: even if you go to the trouble of pre-ordering, you'll only end up with one set of bonus kit...

Microsoft cracking down on third-party hard drives

Microsoft has a blunt message for Xbox 360 owners who have invested in third-party storage peripherals: "Don’t use unauthorized Xbox 360 Storage Devices." In a post at the official Xbox news site Major Nelson, Microsoft has revealed a key feature of the next system update will be the neutralisation of all unauthorised HDD units...

Monday Screens! (12/10/2009)

Monday is the hardest part of the week. First you have to wake up, and then eventually, you must leave the house to go to wherever you need to be. To make Monday tolerable, we collect a bunch of screenshots (some are good, others not so much) - that attempt to brighten up an otherwise dull part of the week.

Weekend Playlist

Street Fighter IV developers obsessed with panties

There's a fascinating in-depth interview now online with the developers of Street Fighter IV. Originally posted to the official Japanese Street Fighter IV blog, and translated by a devoted fan, it features in-depth discussion on a variety of topics: how play balance must be adapted as fans get used to characters, how the characters from the Alpha series had to be re-designed for the Street Fighter II milieu, and even how the bone in E. Honda's hair was mapped in to the skeleton modeling system. They also talk about underwear...

Dragon Age: Origins to receive two years of DLC

So, who else spent most of yesterday tinkering with the Dragon Age: Origins character creator? BioWare are promising two years' worth of downloadable content to expand the game's lifespan.
