Sony relents — custom sound finally supported for PS3 UT3 mods

Epic Games has announced that Unreal Tournament 3 mods for the PS3 can now support the importation of custom sounds.
This development trails the launch of UT3 on PS3 by 18 months. Better late than never.
The reason for this colossal delay is spelled out in the press release: "Thanks to cooperation with Sony, Epic Games is able to offer its QA-tested and approved PS3 sound conversion tools to mod authors." The sticking point appears to have been Sony's insistence that all game audio be recorded in the company's proprietary ATRAC3 sound format.
Aspiring PS3 modders can use the standard UT3 PC mod tools, but must download an additional ATRAC tools bundle (and sign the accompanying EULA) to make custom sounds possible.
More details here.
