Now Playing (1/08/09)

Welcome to this week's instalment of Now Playing, where each week, we trawl through bunches and bunches of recently released trailers in a bid to expose the most popular, most interesting, and even sometimes, the most boring video footage that you can possibly imagine.
This week, we take a look at the land of Pripyat, where we figure out what it is like to survive 40,000 years into the future. Once that is done, we exhume some historical musical icon that no one really cares about any more and reanimate their burnt out corpses in the digital realm, before learning about the sounds of war.
Finally, we see what it is like when a developer promotes a "very easy automatic mode" as one of the key features of the game that they are planning to release.
Five minute long trailers for games are getting rarer and rarer. While we don't really know if that means that publishers are getting lazy, or whether games are getting shallower, it is always pretty specal when the five minutes of trailer shows off something that looks impressive. The latest instalment in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R franchise looks to do just that, with environments that seem larger, more atmospheric, and more detailed apparently present in the upcoming title. It looks pretty good.

While many people will argue that Dawn of War II is dead, Relic keep trying to pump life into it. It is kind of funny that the new content is called "The Last Stand". Ever since the last patch, the game hasn't really stood, in my opinion, so maybe the new content will teach the game how to crawl. It will take some time for the game to come back to me, personally, but there will have to be some pretty massive changes for it to get any more love and attention.

Kurt Cobain might be dead, but to the dismay of some people, his music lives on. Meanwhile, Activision hear cash registers opening, and their coffers being filled even more. The record labels get their cut in royalties, and everyone is happy, except for maybe, Courtney Love. In any case, more Guitar Hero must mean something to someone... maybe.

Guns make lots of noise. They are often included in video games. People like listening to noise, especially when it is in video games. While audio is pretty important in games, the way in which this developer diary is put together makes me a little bit sceptical. It seems a bit like a "developer diary for dummies", and seems to have really, really basic stuff that you would expect video game developers to do anyway. In any case, the game looks like it do the job, which means that people will be able to kill other people.

While some people will complain that video games are too easy, it just seems that developers are making them even easier. If you don't believe me, this new trailer for Bayonetta demonstrates otherwise. We have a woman, who in numerous attempts to not break a nail apparently controls some impressive on screen action with a single hand. So you know, the other one can be preparing food or doing other womanly things like sending frivolous text messages, or reading a magazine. I mean, really - what is the point of playing a game if you just tap two buttons constantly without any strategy or thought?
