On the battlefield, music may well be the last thing on your mind, but when free falling through the beauty of the skies - admittedly, into a battlefield, but still - an appropriately majestic soundtrack is a must. Luckily for Section 8, the upcoming FPS about soldiers who jump out of planes, award-winning composer Jason Graves has been hard at work creating just that.
Jason Graves has a long association with video game scores, with a list of credits to his name including such diverse titles as Heroes of Might & Magic V and Rayman Raving Rabbids, both Dead Space and prequel Dead Space: Extraction, and more recently Sega's upcoming modern-day espionage RPG, Alpha Protocol. He also has some serious credit with the general geekdom community for having contributed to the soundtracks of most major Star Trek games.
Section 8's gameplay apparently takes place in two contrasting settings (I wonder if they mean "falling out of the sky" and "being shot at"?) and the soundtrack has been tailored to reflect this:
"One is more orchestral in nature and the other has a hybrid rock edge to it. TimeGate gave me a lot of freedom to try different things - it was refreshing to experiment with such a diverse sound palette ... SECTION 8 was a great opportunity to combine my three musical passions: orchestra, electronics/synths and guitars ... It was so much fun playing guitar and tweaking my analog synths. I treated them as additional members of the orchestra, sometimes taking the spotlight and other times adding textural background."That sounds... kind of baffling, actually, but will probably make more sense to those of you with greater musical knowledge than me. In any case, it seems that Section 8 will sound as good as it looks when it release for PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in early September.
