Weekly Digest - 24/08/2009
Each week, we collate the most popular stories that we published over the past seven days, plus a lineup of the most downloaded files added in the same timeframe. That way, in case you missed something, you can catch up in one helpful little spot, every Monday morning.

Last week, people who didn't make it to the Brisbane meet up wanted to know everything that happened. While that really wasn't gaming news, (the announcement of the PlayStation 3 slim took that honour), news from BlizzCon also proved to be extremely popular. Other popular news involved a certain upcoming MMO being given "best seller status", and a teaser trailer for another MMO (incidentally, from the same company) capturing the attention of hundreds of gamers.
Games.On.Net Brisbane Community Meet Up

On Saturday night the Brisbane Games On Net members decided to leave their computers at home and head out to put some faces to names, enjoy a nice meal and have a few drinks. With special interstate guests, Acaila and Slaine, the night was full of laughs, drinks and one hell of a good night.

Playstation 3 Slim finally confirmed

It was one of the most anticipated hours of two major European games events. For weeks it's been nearly impossible to browse a gaming site without being assaulted by a slew of Playstation-related rumours, and Sony usual "we do not comment on rumours" policy only helped fuel the frenzy. Finally, the GDC Europe Sony conference is complete, and we have the answers to some of the most burning questions of the current console generation!

Day 1: What we got up to at BlizzCon 2009

As UgLyPuNk mentioned earlier today, we are indeed over here in California for BlizzCon 2009. Games On Net spent the day on the show floor, running around and checking out the various cosplayers, looking at the artwork on display, guessing which attendees are actually pro-gamers, and generally having a bit of a great time. In case you've been enjoying your time under that rock, BlizzCon is an almost-annual celebration of all things Blizzard, taking elements from their three major gaming franchises, StarCraft, Diablo and Warcraft (of course, not ignoring World of Warcraft). It's two days, 20,000 people, a convention center and a lot of fun.

Aion goes gold, already a best seller

If you keep an eye on the weekly Steam Top Sellers you'll know that new MMORPG Aion is already one of the best-selling titles around, more than a month before release. I wonder how many copies it will shift when it actually releases? We'll know soon enough; NCSoft are justifiably excited to announce that the game has gone gold, meaning it is on its way to manufacturers to be packed onto discs and sent winging around the world for sale.

BlizzCon Opening Ceremony - Live from Anaheim

Well, here we are in sunny California for the fourth celebration of all things Blizzard! That's right, BlizzCon is upon us for another year, and this time around we're expecting some big news from the worlds of Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo, not to mention the changes that are in store for Battle.net. If you missed it, we sat through the Opening Ceremony so you didn't have to - and if you missed it, trust me: you missed out. We were expecting an announcement about the next Diablo III class, and we got that: the Monk. We wanted news on what was happening in WoW, and we got that: the next expansion pack, Cataclysm! Not only is it looking like it will literally change the game's landscape, but it also introduces Goblins and Worgen!

Guild Wars 2 - first teaser trailer has landed - looks nice.

The folk at NCsoft have released a fairly epic trailer for Guild Wars 2, which shows off the game world. The trailer contains a few morsels of information regarding the plot of the game, but shows off more landscape than anything else. In any case, it looks pretty stunning, and should appeal to even those who feign agony whenever "MMO" is mentioned. Definitely a game to look out for, especially if you are into MMOs.

Dust 514: FPS RTS MMO from CCP

If you've thought it a bit quiet the last few weeks, you're not alone; rather than just firing off and leaking information as usual, everyone seems to have been keeping very hush-hush in order to surprise everyone at GDC Europe. It's going to be a very busy few days, with any luck, and the first cab off the rank is a new title from EVE Online developers CCP, who've revealed a new MMO set within the EVE universe, Dust 514.

PS3 Slim and PSP glamour photos

Yesterday we were all rightly vindicated for our months-long suspicions of the imminent arrival of the PS3 Slim. Today, though, we have a range of lovely photos of the little darling itself, all nice and official, direct from Sony. As an added bonus, they've thrown in a handful of pictures of the Aqua and Blossom Pink models from the new colour range for the PSP. Enjoy!

Coming Attractions - 19/08/2009

It’s another slow week on the new release front, with just two new titles hitting retail store shelves. One of those just happens to be the latest Wolfenstein outing on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. On the other hand, the final and best looking of the Winter of Xbox Live Arcade line up, Shadow Complex is available later tonight. Don’t forget to check out the full release schedule for the latest changes and information on upcoming games.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 deploys March 11, 2010

DICE and Electronic Arts have announced that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will be released in Australia on the 11th of March 2010, bringing with it some lofty claims. Building on the first console title, Bad Company 2 will feature an enhanced destruction engine mechanic, vehicles, and open world environments. Promising to push the online-warfare experience, Bad Company 2 sounds like it will be good, but the marketing hyperbole makes us a little bit cynical for now.

Day 2: What we got up to at BlizzCon 2009

Well, BlizzCon is over for another year, and while it came in with a pop of pyrotechnics, it's gone out with a roar, thanks to the one and only Ozzy Osbourne (the only mortal to successfully challenge Arthas for the title of Prince of Darkness). My ears are still ringing, but I'm here to let you know just what we got up to during Day 2 of this celebration of all things Blizzard. To summarise briefly: we caught up with the pro-gaming situation, watched StarCraft exhibition matches, checked out the new World of Warcraft magazine, spent a bit of time in the retro arcade... and generally wandered aimlessly through the four halls of the Convention Center, along with 20,000 other gamers.

Monday Screens! (17/08/2009)

Every Monday, here at Games On Net we choose to collate and deliver all the screenshots that have been added to the file library in the last week, in a bid to make the start of the working week a little bit more cheerful. Today, there's a bunch of new screenshots for a bunch of games. I'm personally pleased to see that there are some new screenshots from Dragon Age: Origins, which to me seems as though its a remedy to the fact that the game has been delayed slightly. Those of you who are waiting for Command and Conquer 4 will also be happy to know that a bunch of new screesnhotss for that game have also been released. As always, we're sure that you'll find at the very least something that interests you in today's collection of Monday Screens!

Fable III - announcement trailer has arrived

Earlier today, Fable III was announced. While details regarding the game are fairly scarce at this point, what is known is that the player will have the chance to rule the land of Albion in the third game instalment. What is also known, is that we've managed to get our grubby little paws on the announcement trailer for the game, which while not revealing all that much about the game itself, seems to suggest that the game will be produced in a very similar style to the first two in the series.

Team Fortress 2 / Day of Defeat Source Update

Updates for both Team Fortress 2 and Day of Defeat: Source have been released. Those of you who also own Left 4 Dead will be pleased (or saddened) to note that some of the changes look similar. The update features a few engine tweaks that apply to the Orange Box Engine, and some bullet spread changes for Team Fortress 2. As always, the update will be automatically updated when your Steam client is restarted.

Assassin's Creed II Q&A

There's been a sudden rush of updates on Assassin's Creed II as Ubisoft show off their sure-fire hit at Gamescom and wind up the hype machine for the game's November release. Sadly, apart from the recent developer's diary, very little of the content of these updates has taken the form of anything we can use to assuage the ache in our eyeballs caused by not looking at enough beautiful graphics. Never mind! We'll soldier on, bleeding eye sockets and all, through this lengthy Q&A document, packed absolutely full of delicious little tidbits of fans keen to see where the series is headed in this new installment. WARNING: Solid walls of text ahead!
