It’s another slow week on the new release front, with just two new titles hitting retail store shelves. One of those just happens to be the latest Wolfenstein outing on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. On the other hand, the final and best looking of the Winter of Xbox Live Arcade line up, Shadow Complex is available later tonight.
Don’t forget to check out the full release schedule for the latest changes and information on upcoming games.
August and the gaming drought draw to a close next week – or so we hope. The only substantial release is Punch Out!! for the Wii, which is totally awesome and well worth your money, as you’d already know if you read our review a couple months back (or imported it). A good week to catch up on the backlog before the storm of September releases hits.

| Military History Commander: Europe at War Platform: PC (Coming to Nintendo DS, PSP) Developer: Slitherine Software Publisher: Koch Media RRP: $AU49.95 There’s a small niche of gamers out there that love their hardcore military strategy games – Military History Commander: Europe at War is for those people. It is a hex and turn-based strategy set during the Second World War. Players can jump in on the Allies or Axis sides and control all facets of the campaign, including recruitment, diplomacy, reconnaissance and battle. One of those games for the really hardcore strategy fans. | ![]() | |
| Shadow Complex Platform: Xbox Live Arcade Developer: Chair Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios RRP: 1200 Microsoft Points ($AU19.20) Arguably the best looking game in the Winter/Summer of XBLA line up, Shadow Complex channels the spirit of Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, offering up high quality non-linear side scrolling action. Loosely tied to the Empire series by Orson Scott Card, Shadow Complex puts you in control of everyman who, after dropping his backpack on a hike, finds an underground tunnel leading to a military facility. After his girlfriend is kidnapped, the hero sets out to get her back. Shadow Complex is most definitely a candidate for best downloadable title of 2009, and well worth the 1200MSP asking price. | ![]() | |
| Wolfenstein Platform: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 Developer: Raven Software Publisher: Activision / id Software RRP: $AU89.95 (PC), $AU109.95 (PS3, Xbox 360) Activision, id Software and Raven are joining forces once again to trot out B.J. Blazkowicz and the Wolfenstein franchise for another supernatural Nazi killing extravaganza. One can’t help but be concerned about the quality of this one given the relatively low noise level pre-release, especially compared with Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Even less has been said about the game’s multiplayer, which is a real concern to those who enjoyed Enemy Territory. However, the Raven/id combination has been proven to work to some extent in the past, so we’ll just have to wait and see. | ![]() |
