Now Playing (28/07/09)

This week's instalment of Now Playing comes to you with a distinct mission and focus - to present a collection of trailers in some way, shape of form that are related to the events which occurred at Comic Con half way around the world at the San Diego Convention Center.
While comics and video games aren't strictly related, the sub-culture and interests of both audiences clash, so, in typical game developer / publisher style, a horde of trailers with the suffix "Comic Con" have surfaced this week, and as always, Now Playing is here to tell you just how bad they are!
This week, we take a look at a comic that sat by and watched as it was turned into a game, before looking at a somewhat evil pitch for a potential comic. After that, we explore an area that isn't all that very well covered in comics, namely relating to dragons and their origins. Once that is done, we find our selves convicted to a splinter cell of sorts, before fighting our way to freedom from within an army comprised of two.
I'm not going to pretend to know anything at all about the comics and film surrounding The Watchmen video game, but I am going to assert that the trailer should really, only be watched by those who own a Sony console, as the content in the trailer is really only enticing, relevant and informative to owners of the PlayStation 3 consoles. In essence, it appears that the complete repacking and retail distribution of a downloadable, digitally distributed game will feed some more dollars into the coffers of publisher and developer and film studio in a nice little package for those who'd (probably) end up buying the game and the film again just to get the special, precious slip case packaging. Don't you just love the video game industry?

The Resident Evil series returns, again, this time, in another on-rails shooter in typical scenarios related to the game, which involves walking slowly, standing still while zombies charge at you, and struggling with aiming mechanics. The trailer for the latest instalment in this formula shows off a number of game play sequences, in a number of areas, with repetitive voice acting, the ability to read horrendously low resolution textures, and a zombies constantly appearing behind you are all on show in the trailer, which - let's face it, is one of the more honest trailers we've seen in recent times throughout the halls of Now Playing.
Resident Evil The Darkside Chronicles Comic-Con 2009 Trailer
While there's no actual Dragons depicted in this week's instalment of Now Playing, we couldn't resist the urge to include at least one game that relates to the powerful and noble beasts. While there isn't nearly enough comic books focusing on medieval sagas and Dragons, duels and all that other wonderful stuff, it didn't stop Bioware and EA taking their treasured beast to Comic Con to show him off. This trailer, like many of the others recently released in promotion of the game, shows off game play footage, with lots of hack and slash, and some awesome intertwined. Do want.
Dragon Age: Origins Comic-Con 2009 Tower of Ishal Trailer
Ah, Sam Fisher. You are the winner of slightly most-relevant trailer this week. A stereotype born out of countless iterations and editions of comic books. The secret agent who gets betrayed, or looses something, and gets very angry at the world, and then goes and kills a lot of people. Sam Fisher, this is your life. While we want more details about the actual game, this trailer doesn't provide them. It does however, show off some new, shiny gameplay footage that we don't think we've seen before. If you're waiting for the game, you should probably watch it.
Tom Clancys Splinter Cell Conviction Comic Con 2009 Trailer
As we progress downwards, towards our final resting place for this week's episode of Now Playing, we're pleased to actually reach a point where we can see the direct relation between comic books and games. With this particular game set to feature a bunch of comic-like still image sequences which follow on from moral choices made throughout the course of the game, which, just as it happens, are created by real world comic book artists, hooray! Yay!
Army of Two The 40th Day Comic Con 2009 Trailer
Each week, there are too many trailers released. While this fact is well known, Now Playing simply cannot provide commentary on every single trailer ever released (but one day, may end up doing this for some absurd reason). In any case, the trailers that do not have the strength, glory, or correct appeal to make it into Now Playing tend to lead lonely lives on the mirror, crying, sobbing, and wanting attention.
Instead of making grave stones for these trailers, and burying them below many feet of sand, we like to give them a special place at the end of Now Playing letting everyone know that this week, these brave, heroic, and sometimes boring trailers did not make the cut. While we don't have a particular pick this week, you'll probably find something that interests you within the list thoughtfully provided by us, below:
