Coming Attractions - 22/07/2009
If you’re a fan of retail video games on HD consoles and the PC, this is not your week. On the other hand, if you like Casper, the Friendly Ghost and DS pet simulations, then you’ll be in heaven. Of course, that counts out most of the readers of this site, but the consolation is that you can finally get your hands on Nintendo’s Wii Motion Plus showcase Wii Sports Resort and the rather awesome looking platformer ’Splosion Man for the Xbox Live Arcade.

Don’t forget to check out the full release schedule for the latest changes and information on upcoming games.

’Splosion Man
Platform: Xbox Live Arcade
Developer: Twisted Pixel
Publisher: Twisted Pixel
RRP: 800 Microsoft Points ($AU13.20)

Kicking off the Winter/Summer of XBLA promotion is Twisted Pixel’s latest effort ’Splosion Man. It’s exactly as it appears on the tin; you control a man who explodes at will through a series of about a hundred challenging platform-based levels. The concept is good, the game looks great, it supports up to four players in co-operative play and it’s only 800 Microsoft Points. Well worth checking out.

Casper’s Scare School: Spooky Sports Day
Platform: Nintendo DS, Wii
Developer: The Code Monkeys
Publisher: Blast! Entertainment
RRP: $AU39.95 (DS), $AU49.95 (Wii)

Casper “the friendly ghost” makes a second video game outing based on a CG film from 2006 which has apparently spawned a new TV series. Casper has been sent to a “scare school” by his uncles in an effort to make him less friendly, and this game presumably has something to do with a sports day at said educational facility. Given the profile of the title and Casper’s recent output, I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

Fast Food Panic
Platform: Nintendo DS, Wii
Developer: Nobilis
Publisher: Nobilis
RRP: $AU69.95

Fast Food Panic looks to be an almagamation of Diner Dash, PC sim games and Wii mini-game compilations. Players are put in charge of a restaurant and must prepare dishes, manage orders, keep everything together behind the scenes and most importantly, keep the customers happy. Seems like something that would work well if executed with care, but there’s little hype or positive pre-release impressions floating around.

Horse Life 2
Platform: Nintendo DS, Wii
Developer: Deep Silver
Publisher: Deep Silver
RRP: $AU49.95

It’s another virtual pet simulation for the Nintendo DS. This one involves looking after a stable of horses, selecting one of seven different breeds and raising it into a champion, as opposed to standing around asking it stupid questions like “Why the long face?” or conversing with it ala Wilbur from TV’s Mr Ed. This one is strictly for the tweenage girl crowd.

Wii Sports Resort
Platform: Wii
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
RRP: $AU99.95

Nintendo prepares to unleashed the sequel to what is now the greatest selling video game of all time. After many hours spent with Wii Sports Resort, I can say with confidence that the game is everything I hoped it would be and more. It’s a perfect showcase for the abilities of the Wii Motion Plus, and beating the snot out of an army of Miis with a sword is well worth the price of admission.

Next week is not much better, friends. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 finds its way onto the Xbox Live Arcade as the second release of the Winter/Summer of XBLA – if the online code is decent, then it’s going to be an absolute must-have. The only other planned release at this stage is the retail release of Watchmen: The End is Nigh which includes the first episode which came out with the film’s release, along with the concluding episode which won’t be on XBLA/PSN/Steam until late August.
