Now Playing (21/07/09)
With July nearing its end, Now Playing comes to you this week in a desperate bid to try and make you all watch trailers and put up with its constant displeasure at all things video-game (and current world-events) related.

This week we take a look at recent events and how the titles of some trailers may or may not relate to things that have recently occurred in the world. First up, we have a morbid memoir to King of Pop (only a few weeks late). After that, we explore what its like to hit things with what was once a tree trunk all for some charred remains and an urn.

After that, we burn rubber to produce smoke, before realising that, as a dragon knight, that's what we're supposed to do. After all that happens, we choose to retreat to a shadowy complex where we can rest.

Rabbids Go Home

The death of Mr. Jackson hasn't really been much of an event on the gaming calendar, but Ubisoft, in their infinite wisdom, have provided a nice bit of memorabilia, with a rabbid moon walking in respect of the now-dead Monarch of Pop. In any case, this particular trailer has a two-fold meaning, especially when we learn (courtesy of another trailer) what it would be like if we had sent a Rabbit to the moon instead of proper astronauts.

Ashes Cricket 2009

Cricket is a sport that has such great potential for video games. Hitting a potentially painful projectile using a piece of wood that was once a tree is such an entertaining prospect that it makes first-person shooters seem tame. If the prospect of swinging a bat at a projectile doesn't entice you, you could always be the person hatefully delivering the ball to an unsuspecting batsman. Alternatively, if you're a bid of a sadist, you could always see how many bruises or life-threatening injuries you could gather as a fielder standing between the ball and the boundary. If all else fails... well, we won't go there...

Need for Speed: SHIFT

Many would argue that the Need for Speed series died a long time ago, but the truth of the matter is that for quite some time now, the mangled wreck that is the series has still been able to provide EA with a decent enough income to keep the series alive through a combination of IV and so many direction changes that it is difficult to keep up. In ignorance of the promise that we'll see lots of realism and awesome in the latest offering, we've got a trailer showing off the "art of drifting" including an interview with a real-world drifter who acted as a consultant on the game.

Divinity 2 - Ego Draconis

While we usually love making fun of trailers in Now Playing, we've started to grow fond of Divinty 2 - Ego Draconis for two reasons. The first of these, as we've previously established on numerous occasions, is that Now Playing loves dragons. So much so, that we shall now endeavour to include at least one trailer featuring a dragon in each week's Now Playing (a promise that may or may not be fulfilled). In any case, you'll just have to put up with our dragon-loving ways until Now Playing gets canned, or people stop making games about Dragons, or... something else bad happens, or, a real Dragon comes to life, and Now Playing, along with the rag-tag Games On Net crew uses it to take over the world!

Shadow Complex

Now Playing has forever held a grudge against platform games, and strongly believes that any platformer should promptly fall into a pit filled with fire, salamanders and other unpleasant creatures, painfully writhing and dying. Unfortunately, not many people share this opinion, and despite all the vocal protests, the platformer remains alive due to Xbox LIVE Marketplace, handheld consoles, and other digital distribution methods. At least, on the bright side, its got guns, and the gameplay doesn't look to involve any of the tedious, horrible falling and jumping which are the most frustrating elements of platform games ever.

Didn't Make the Cut
Each week, lots of trailers are released, each one try to make itself more important than the last. The truth of the matter is that the trailers that don't make it into Now Playing proper only deserve one fate, and that is to be put in the rubbish bin demoted to the status of "Didn't Make the Cut".

This week's fine selection of such trailers is listed below, with there surely being something there for everyone. Except, for maybe... some types of people that can never be pleased, no matter how awesome something is.
