Now Playing (13/07/09)

It is Tuesday once more, and whether you like it or not, Now Playing returns with a twinkle in its eye and a chip on its shoulder. This week, we examine many recently released trailers, noting our displeasure (or in rare cases, pleasure) at the content held within.
This week, we take another look at the world from those privileged enough to spend time with dragons, before being consumed by flame and finding ourselves in hell. Shortly after we've been tormented for our sins, we discover that in actual fact, we were stuck in an asylum, which may or may not have once been inhabited by insane members of the army.
Finally, we come to the not-so surprising revelation that we're all just virtual, disgruntled World War II era veterans out to make a buck and save the world.
Even though we first met our beloved Dragon in last week's instalment of Now Playing, thinking that we'd never get to see him again, we're somewhat happy that he's managed to make a return for this week's Now Playing. Even if I remark that the trailer is considerably shorter and not as well presented as last week's offering, you're obviously missing the point - the fact that the dragon is back, and awesome as ever.

Ah, Hell. The place where bad people (and games) go where they die, and the place that EA promise we'll get to see in Dante's Inferno. While we are not really sure what has caused such a dark shadow to fall over Now Playing this week, we're choosing to believe that many dark games have had trailers released for them this week, and with the current state of the world, its just best to go with the gloomy flow than try to terrify everyone with unfamiliar sunshine and rainbows.

Following on with the theme of bad people, there's no better place to store them thanin an Asylum where a slightly less bad man, otherwise known as a Superhero, can use them as his proverbial punching bag, right? While this trailer doesn't show much of that actually happening, the villains of Arkham Asylum do look like they've been lovingly created from the most vile depths of tyranny and rage, meaning that even those who would rather be sympathetic to the plight of the imprisoned should at the very least find something to like about these anti-heroes, right?

While there's no insane army men (as far as I know, at least) inside Arkham Asylum, there's a special place in the army otherwise known as Section 8 for men who choose to accept what many would consider suicide missions. Suicide missions are only really fun in games, anyway, so we don't really see why people would go completely insane in a game context and just send their virtual selves in to the fray only to die. In any case, dropping into battle seems like fun, and it reminds me of one of the many quotes that you get to see in war games that solicit wise-ness and logic in relation to war. Your goal, basically, is to make the other guy die for their country.

While Wolfenstein is a very respected game property, it doesn't stop certain people from trying to capitalise upon the nostalgia value of other people by making a new title in the series that is bound to spawn hundreds of thousands of sequels. While personally, the great big chip on Now Playing's shoulder doesn't care whether the game is any good or not, we're amused and entertained by the near flawless smugness of the protagonist in the trailer we've chosen to let you see below. The animation is good, the explosions are good, and the bit with the disintegrating flesh and bones being exposed in an explosion is a technical marvel. As for the game being any good, we'd personally err on the side of caution and continue to cherish this trailer, choosing to ignore the actual presence of the game behind it.

This week's pick is the APB Podcast Episode 5 APB Tattoos vs. RL Tattoos trailer. There's something that just seems so pointless about this so called "podcast" that makes my black little heart chuckle with glee. For the first three and a half minutes, at least. What follows is an insight to the game's tattoo system with commentary provided by real world tattoo artists.

Each week, there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of trailers released for new and upcoming games. Sometimes, these trailers are amusing. Other times, they are pointless.
