Now Playing (30/06/09)
By Steven Perdikis - Tue Jun 30, 2009 6:30pm
Another Tuesday means that it is time for your weekly dose of Now Playing, where each week, Games On Net brings you a selection of the most interesting and sometimes boring trailers released recently.
This week, we start the festivities with a new developer diary from Dark Void, which kind of reveals why people probably won't get the game when it is released. After that we get extremely unnerved by bizarre marketing courtesy of Saints Row 2 which questions my faith in humanity. After that, we declare war on the world, by embarking on a journey into Massive Action Game. After that, we fail to learn how exactly Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince came to be (we're told it was magic), before finally settling a childhood rivalry with a not so MegaMan.

Vertical combat is just something that not many games can pull of successfully. I have a hypothesis as to why this is the case for those that care. While observing most people playing most generic cover shooter games, you'll often notice that they can only focus on doing one thing at once. Thus, once you add a third dimension, like, up or down, as opposed "behind that piece of cover" people whine and cry and moan because they're used to doing things in a certain way because every single other game they've ever played since the latest cover shooter does everything in the exact same way. To be fair, vertical combat is likely to be disorienting, and uncomfortable, as most of us, do, really live our lives in two dimensions, only focusing on whatever concerns us at street level. While Dark Void does look promising in parts, I fear that it will be ultimately seen as nothing more than another "vertical shooter that fails".

Now Playing never, ever for one moment thought it would ever be left speechless. This trailer has unnerved it, invading the great ivory tower of peace and love that is the status quo of Now Playing. We have no words for you, Saints Row 2, only that you could have birthed something that rivals the great legend of Ran Ran Ru. Now Playing is both scared and disturbed.

Games are getting bigger and bigger, so much so that mere mortals usually can't finish a game entirely before the next big one comes out. That makes me kind of grateful that I personally don't see the appeal in MAG: Massive Action Game, that is being developed for the PlayStation 3, in which 256 players, at once can enter a fantasy world where they work together and at times, against one, to gain control things in order to... have fun. While I really can't see the point in the fairly shallow excuse for a plot that the trailer pitches, the fact that 256 players can play at once isn't really a technological feat, given the massive infrastructure that powers MMO games.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince makes me sick of trailers that do the complete opposite of what they suggest they'll do. "Making of Video" suggests that I'll learn how the game was made, not the features contained within the game. You disappoint me and have broken my heart for the last time, Harry, even though I've never read about your exploits nor seen them on the big screen, why should I bother when your "making of" trailer fails at even doing what it says it does? I'm unhappy.

Mega Man is an odd person. Either you love him, or you hate him with every single fibre of your being. I come from the later camp, having first being exposed to the hero on the original brick sized gameboy, which led me to great frustration and horror throughout my adolescent years, the most rewarding which was the GameBoy itself being stolen by those worrisome child bullies, which while saddening at the time, rid me of the horrible curse that was MegaMan. In any case, the series is still alive, and to prove the fact, here's a lengthy trailer from a DS incarnation of the game, developed at Capcom.

This week's pick of the litter, so to speak is the Overgrowth 'Dainty Decal Trailer'. It is pick of the week for two reasons. The first of these is the excellent use of alliteration in the trailer's name. The second of these makes itself evident at the end of the trailer, and should be accompanied with a phrase along the lines of "One does not simply shoop da whoop into Mordor", in an pointless effort to combine two memes.
In any case, if that isn't to your tastes, you can always check out one of thefinely crafted, hand picked trailers below:

Each week, hundreds, sometimes thousands of trailers are released. This means that not all of them can sneak into Now Playing. Hence, they don't make the cut, and end up here at the end, to be forgotten by all.Didn't Make the Cut
