Now Playing (9/06/09)
By Steven Perdikis - Tue Jun 9, 2009 6:30pm
The curse that is E3 is finally lifted, allowing Now Playing to return to the status-quo, meaning that your weekly dose of trailers continues, undisturbed from its restless slumber. Sadly, the file mirror is still reeling with agony from last week's E3 trailers, and game developers and publishers around the world remain been relatively quiet as they nurse their hangovers and whatever traces of Swine Flu they've contracted in Los Angeles. In any case, Now Playing continues.
This week, we've got an important message from the Minionstry of information regarding Overlord II. After being evil, we take a look at C.O.P. The Recruit, a new open world action game for the Nintendo DS. Next, we check out some online super heroes in DC Universe Online, who promptly get their backsides destroyed by the many characters of Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Finally, we get to engage in some Pyschokinetic Wars.

Overlord II is coming very soon. So soon in fact, that Codemasters have released a new trailer preparing the world for the game's release. The demo came out last week on the Xbox 360, and a PC and PlayStation 3 demo is coming this week. For those that haven't had a chance to play the demo yet - rest assured, the game is still as solid as ever. While there isn't much actual innovation, the Minions and the Overlord are back, which is all that really matters.

While the Nintendo DS isn't often seen as a mature gaming platform, some developers and publishers are attempting to bring more mature titles to the platform in a bid to expand their wallets like an accordian. This speedy trailer from C.O.P. The Recruit shows off Ubisoft's new dedication to the platform. It looks quite good visually, and if the game is anything like the trailer, then who knows, it might not suck, despite looking very much like a cross between Need for Speed: Undercover and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the later of which is actually an incredibly good game.

Every day, a new MMO is announced, and a cute and cuddly animal is scarified in order to facilitate development, the collective and unfortunate result of executives driving to work with steely grips on the wheel of their auto-mobiles, chasing dreams and the dollar which adorns the hood of their vehicle. Marvel Comics, and MMO in the same sentence is bound to work, and sell well among die-hard comic book fans. On the other hand, it is being developed by Sony Online Entertainment, which was the developer behind the catastrophic failure otherwise known as Star Wars Galaxies. So, my advice to you, dear readers is to not hold your breath.

The Final Fantasy series has spawned many, many heroes and many, many villains. While some have gotten together in the Kingdom Hearts series, for the most part, the characters were unable to beat each other up for no particular reason. As we all have our own most hated characters within the Final Fantasy universe, there's sure to be some satisfaction in Dissidia: Final Fantasy, no matter how you look at it. Squall, you're first. Tidus, and Wakka, you're next.

If I'm not mistaken, (which I'm not) the original Cellfactor was a tech demo for Ageia PhysX, with precious little depth short of "Yay, we can use physics to kill and destroy stuff!". As a result, I find it quite interesting that a game with a very similar name, and very similar gameplay mechanics (and somewhat similar graphics) has found its way to consoles. Sure, PhysX is cross platform now (thanks, nVidia!) but it kind of defeats the purpose a little bit if we can't use our shiny graphics cards to get any sort of realistic physics out of current PC games other than "Yay, the glass breaks realistically!" Or; "Yay, cloth behaves like it should"... or ... just ... "Yay!". Don't get me wrong, I love my GTX 285, as it has lots of power, but I'd like to use the PhysX power of the card some day on a game that is actually, y'know, good?

This week's pick is UFC 2009 Undisputed 'Fighting Techniques' E3 2009 Trailer where we learn that the art of fighting isn't just hitting someone until they fall down in quivering heap begging for mercy. For some reason, watching a man beat another man into a bloody pulp is strangely compelling, but at the same time, it is disturbing.
If that isn't to your tastes, you can always check out the following selection offinely crafted, hand picked trailers.

With E3 now nothing more than road kill on the proverbial information super highway, and quickly receding into the horizon, we return to our regular programming, and Didn't Make the Cut triumphantly breaks its leg on the journey back into the spotlight, before groaning at a selected trailer for reasons unknown, all the whole refusing medical treatment.Didn't Make the Cut
