[E3 2009] Now Playing - E3 Special 2009: Day 2
By Steven Perdikis - Wed Jun 3, 2009 6:32pm
It is the second day of E3, and it was a massive day. That makes Now Playing] all the more difficult, as today we've got 87, (yes EIGHTY SEVEN) trailers from Los Angeles, and have them all on the mirror, ready to be downloaded (and streamed!).
Now Playing is in a blur this evening, with so many pretty lights and stunning screenshots (and, of course, trailers) that it just has to be seen.
Tonight, we'll take a look at Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll a new PlayStation 3 exclusive from KOEI. Next, we'll take another look at the time-travelling Singularity, the next first person shooter from Raven Software. After that, we take a look at Rogue Warrior, and PROTOTYPE before finally ending today's look at E3 with Overlord II.

We've seen a lot of trailers from E3 this year, and while some have been impressive, and while some have blown people away, it has been a while since I've seen a trailer that gets me as excited as the trailer for Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll. The game is a J-RPG promising a "massive story", with party based combat and magic, swords, and "other attacks". While I'm not all that interested in the plot at this moment, the trailer has a unique art style, that looks pretty spiffy, and the concept art for the game is simply jaw dropping. Watch the trailer, and then drool over the concept art, like I did.

Singularity is the latest first person shooter from Raven Software that deals with two common "hardcore gaming" mainstays - the Soviet Union, and Time Travel, both of which haven't really been executed flawlessly in a video game. The latest trailer shows off more of the in-game footage (which is mixed in with historical recordings) to entice gamers to enter the Soviet Union in many time frames, where they are given a device that control time in a localised area. It looks like it could be fun, but for the most part it looks like a generic shooter with time travel added in as a core part of the gameplay.

Rogue Warrior promises to be an authentic, tactical first person shooter that is based on a series of Novels by Richard (Dick) Marcinko, a guy who used to a U.S. Navy SEAL. The game is in development, and this new trailer shows that the game has well and truly slipped from its initial 2007 release target, however those that have been waiting for the game will likely forgive this, as the trailer is sure to entertain.

PROTOTYPE. We've almost seen so much of this game in trailers, that it kind, (well, maybe) makes it redundant to actually go out and buy the game when it releases on the 10th of June (exactly seven days from now!). While the latest trailer for the game teases ever so much about the glorious open-world action and over the top violence when can expect from the game, as much as I hate to say it, at the current rate, I think we'll still be watching E3 trailers in three months time before we can find any time to play any games that are actually, y'know, being released really soon.

Overlord II is the only game that will continue to win my heart no matter how many shiny lights and awesome trailers are thrown at me from other game titles. The first game was just so much damn fun that I'm looking forward to the game (as much as it pains me to say it) than my beloved addiction, World in Conflict. In the second game, Minions will be able to ride monsters and destroy things and die for you, all with a smile on their face, just as it should be. In any case, the new trailer outlines what new Overlords should now about their question less, obedient and loyal servants.

As it is E3 Week, we just can't bring ourselves to demean trailers to the status of "Didn't Make the Cut", which regularly graces Now Playing each week. To celebrate this, we've introduced a special After Hours Screening session, in which you can view all the trailers that didn't make it into Now Playing proper. They're all on the mirror, and ready for you to download or stream.
Today's selection includes: Join us again tomorrow for another dose of trailers, straight from E3!
