[E3 2009] Sony Press Conference Liveblog E3 2009
By Jessica Citizen - Wed Jun 3, 2009 3:21am
Their big cat is out of the bag, but we're crossing our fingers that they'll still come up with the goods and announce some other cool stuff as well. What are you most looking forward to? New hardware? New software? New titles? Let us know, and stay right here as we bring you all the latest.
| LIVE BLOG: (most recent event first) |
5:37am : "When you think about great gaming, you think about PlayStation." Yes, Jack. Thank you, Jack. See you in a year!
5:36am : Jack reiterates that these things are "only possible" on PS3. "Other companies ask you to imagine the future of gaming," but Jack believes that today, they've shown you.
5:36am : And they cut it a bit short, but it's playable on the show floor, with an extra 20 minutes available to show you how it ends. Game comes out next March!
5:32am : ...and it looks pretty much like you'd expect: Big, Shiny, Violent... lots of stabbing.
5:29am : "One of the most eagerly-anticipated games of this generation..." is apparently God of War III, and we're being treated to the first few minutes of actual gameplay.
5:28am : ...and no, that'd be nothing new really, but it's still shiny :)
5:26am : Anyway - here's a new video of Gran Turismo 5, which may or may not tell us something we don't know.
5:26am : So pretty. Much love.
5:23am : I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I'm so glad this is real.
5:22am : Looks like that leak was official, too. Very nice. If you haven't seen it yet, we're hoping to have it as soon as we can.
5:21am : (although, actually, The Last Guardian, technically.)
5:21am : TRICOOOOOOOOO!
5:21am : Hiya Jack - you must be nearly done, I'm guessing. He's about to give us a sneak-peek at something upcoming for PS3...
5:20am : "Race. Create. Share." - nice!
5:20am : And! You can upload and share this track with mates - and they can download and remix it, too. It really is LittleBigPlanet on wheels :)
5:19am : Moving the sun so that it's a nicely highlighted sunset track. This is cool.
5:19am : SHEEEEEEP! ("You'll have to forgive him, he's from Australia")
5:18am : *adds safety cones to run into* / *adds weapons to be picked up*
5:18am : Now adding trees around the track... but we need somewhere for the racers to live! Let's use the village tool!
5:17am : Now we're making some of the track into dirt, and adding mountains to it, and a lake... easy peasy terraforming!
5:16am : Now we're starting with a blank canvas, to watch someone set up a track for us. Apparently the controls are the same as driving around... you draw a big blob of black on the ground, and when you complete the loop, it will automatically finish it up for you, bridges and linemarking and such.
5:15am : There are some special skills - jumps, smashers... and this track was made within the game, too :)
5:14am : Despite the cute cuddly characters, the maps look pretty awesome, actually!
5:14am : Showing off some customisation options - character, cars... unlimited combinations, apparently!
5:13am : The characters look like the collectable vinyl toys that are popular atm - Munny - cartoony and pretty cute. Reminiscent of Sackboy, in terms of flirting with the camera and such.
5:12am : United Front Games have been working on this - we're being shown some concept art, while being told about what they've been doing - a "fairly modern take" on kart racing.
5:11am : Meanwhile, let's check out the next game in the "Play Create Share" genre: ModNation Racers.
5:11am : Talking about how it's been a success in terms of social networking, gaming, user generated content etc.
5:11am : Jack is now talking about LittleBigPlanet, showing off some new Disney Interactive Studios SackBoy costumes you'll be able to download soon (Jack Sparrow!).
5:10am : Still want to know more about this, I have to say. Reserving some judgement on the Playstation Motion Controller for a while - it's due to launch by the end of 2010 :)
5:09am : Archery - get an arrow out of the quiver on your back, notch it, aim, pull back, let it fly. Cool!
5:08am : Multitouch is possible, I've also just seen the comment that "this is what we wanted from the Wiimote" - but we already have a Wiimote.
5:07am : More sandbox demonstration, tickling a dummy with a sword. As you do.
5:06am : Can use the drawing tool for various other things - like selecting/sending troops in an RTS!
5:05am : The writing and painting looks pretty cool though, some amazing fine-tuned controls.
5:04am : Ooh, virtual sandbox - which looks kinda like Boom-Blox, honestly.
5:04am : I'm hoping a video surfaces of this, because it's kinda tricky to explain.
5:03am : I'm not quite sure what to make of this. It looks interesting, but not really "special", hm.
5:02am : Aha! a friend just commented that the controller looks like a roll-on deodorant stick - she's right!
5:02am : We can see the guys onstage, the video onscreen - and then the video of the guy on stage on the video on the screen. (Confused yet?)
5:01am : Now showing off how it works, "you can hold anything in your hand", apparently.
5:01am : He's stressing that this is an engineering prototype and the end product will look different... kinda reassuring because the current thing he's waving around looks like a black Wiimote with a glowing orb on the end.
5:00am : "...wow, they got trumped," says UgLyPuNk.
5:00am : It's a new controller (who'dathunk?) that has "a variety of buttons" - and there's a glowing orb on the end of it that changes colour according to the action in the game.
4:59am : Now a couple of Sony engineers onstage to talk about what I can only imagine is their new motion-sensing control system.
4:58am : ...motion control gaming... he's bignoting Sony because the EyeToy came out ages ago and was the first "true' motion-sensing controller (you knew that was coming, right?) :)
4:57am : "There's one that didn't leak out, huh!" Jack is funny. No Peter Moore, but he's funny.
4:57am : And oh, it's shiny, and there's epic music, and they even call it an epic! And yay. Final Fantasy. Yay.
4:56am : "The PS3 is the only platform you will be able to play FFXIV on, when it launches in 2010." Am I being too skeptical to read that as implying it's only a timed exclusive?
4:55am : Meanwhile, Jack would now like to introduce the first-ever footage of... wait for it... Final Fantasy XIV!
4:55am : ...can't really say much more than "It's Final Fantasy XIII", really.
4:52am : Now, it's Square Enix's turn in the spotlight - with a video of Final Fantasy XIII.
4:51am : Jack is now continuing to talk about how great it is that you can link PSP to PS3, and how wonderful it is that people take advantage of that.
4:51am : Both games are due out "this holiday", hoorah. Save up now!
4:50am : Very nifty, Ubi. Nice work.
4:50am : Oo, smoke bomb!
4:50am : Another mention of Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines - which you can link to the PS3 version of AC:2, apparently.
4:49am : ...that includes a double-stab, which Sebastien just used to dispatch two enemies at once, with a blade to the throat of each. (Audience: "Whoooaaaa!")
4:49am : Ezio has more assassination techniques than his predecessor, something that Ubi thought was important.
4:48am : Leonardo is your own personal inventor - and you get to try out famous things he's drawn up - like a flying machine! This looks very cool, and pseudo-historically interesting.
4:47am : This time, you don't start out as an assassin - but you learn how to become one with the help of some friends. One of these friends... Leonardo da Vinci. As ya do, right?
4:46am : Patrice explains that the game follows immediately after the events of the first - but you're in a totally different time period: the Italian Renaissance. You're no longer Altair (obvs), instead you now have a typically Italian Renaissance name. Lots of syllables and European accent.
4:45am : Sebastien! That's his friend's name. I knew that. He's the one playing the game.
4:45am : ...instead, we meet Patrice and a friend of his from Ubisoft, who are showing off Assassin's Creed 2.
4:44am : Espionage, assassins, late 1970s... sounds intriguing. This one I'd have liked to see a trailer for, but none was forthcoming :(
4:44am : A new property from Rockstar North - Agent - exclusive to PS3.
4:44am : ...Rockstar? What are you doing there?
4:43am : ...still, he gets the applause. Heh.
4:42am : I'm sure it's an effective way of showing all the games at once, but - honestly - I'm falling asleep here, sorry guys. Even if they took a moment to announce the games they're talking about, it would be more interesting.
4:38am : "2009 is going to be all about content on the PlayStation 3," says Jack. And rather than talk about it, he's showing us another montaaage.
4:37am : Oh, right, that's what he was saying. Final Fantasy VII is hitting the PlayStation Network today, and kicks off a collection of fifty downloadable PS1 games that you can play on the PS3. Nice.
4:36am : ...and here's a "quick video" to show what's going on in Home now that it's six months old.
4:36am : They're working further to expand Home content with a bunch of third-party publisher content.
4:35am : ...and now we look at PlayStation Home for a moment - 6.5 million users worldwide. That's a lot more than I'd expected :/
4:34am : Hello, Final Fantasy VII!
4:34am : PSN is easy and painless, with tons of content for no hidden fees. Nice dig there, Jack.
4:33am : PSP is set to have a "tremendous" year, says Jack. He's now transitioning to discuss the PlayStation Network, and how awesome it is.
4:30am : Mmm, LittleBigPlanet for PSP, being shown in a montaaage video of all the (exciting) upcoming titles.
4:29am : Resident Evil will be coming to PSP for the first time next year, along with a collection of other titles - including Harry Potter!
4:28am : Welcome back, Jack. I hope your heart-rate has gone down a bit, you're looking a bit more relaxed as you're talking about Resident Evil.
4:28am : Okay, I know we're focussing on PSP, but are they going to bring Kojima-san out twice, or is MGS:Rising really not coming to PS3 just yet?
4:27am : ...
4:27am : Due in 2010 for PSP, with Hideo writing the script. Should be interesting.
4:26am : Oh look, it's a cardboard box!
4:25am : The game is the legendary "missing link", apparently.
4:24am : ...and here's the first-look trailer, very 70s, nuclear, lots of political quotes... we head to Costa Rica...
4:22am : Kojima-san will be working very heavily with this project, as will MGS4 team - stresses that it is not a side project or spin-off. It's planned to take advantage of the PSP elements.
4:21am : ...and yes, talk he does - Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker is exclusively for PSP, 10 years after MGS3, set in the 70s. A "true sequel", he says.
4:21am : He has a translator today, obviously he's actually going to be talking rather than just making prepared statements.
4:20am : HIDEO KOJIMAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
4:20am : Kaz is back! He's talking about Metal Gear Solid!
4:19am : For what it's worth, the video is happily showing both the PSP-3000 and PSP Go playing the game, promoting the 800 cars and 35 tracks... and it's dated October 1, 2009.
4:18am : He seems fascinated by the fact the PSP is such a little machine, wants to reassure everybody that it's still a good game. Throw to trailer!
4:17am : This social element is a "big part" of Gran Turismo PSP.
4:17am : More than 800 cars contained within the game - so you probably won't be able to unlock them all yourself, why not trade with your friends? (It's like moto-pokemon!)
4:16am : Also - trading/sharing cars between your garage and your friends.
4:16am : "This is not a shrunken-down subset of the series," he says (through a translator) - and it has new added features specifically for PSP, such as ad-hoc wireless.
4:15am : Legacy License mode... is that tied back to your saved games on other platforms?
4:14am : He's now showing the game running on a PSP-Go, a "very very small piece of hardware" that can handle a full quality game of Gran Turismo, at 60fps.
4:13am : Now taking the stage, the very Japanese Kazunouri Yamauchi, the "father of Gran Turismo" - and he announces, in his first breath, Gran Turismo PSP.
4:13am : "Our news does not stop there," Kaz says.
4:12am : Signed partnerships with a bunch of new providers - showtime, g4, e!, hdnet, stars tv, ufc, various anime... a whole bunch of logos were flashed on the screen - again, WHEN WILL WE SEE THIS? :(
4:12am : Video delivery service was launched at E3 last year - and it has had more than 1900 movies and 9400 tv shows available. It's now being launched - natively - onto the PSP as well as the PS3. (...but when will we see it?)
4:11am : US$249.99 price point on launch in the US - same as the PSP at launch.
4:10am : He very nearly dealt with how they'll manage physical releases for PSP-Go, but swerved at the last moment.
4:10am : Jumping around much, Kaz?
4:09am : The PSP toolkit will see an 80% price reduction, so more people will be able to develop for the platform.
4:09am : Sense-me will analyse your music library and coordinate playlists based on your mood or the occasion.
4:08am : Launching today: a new application to use the PlayStation Store from the PSP - Media Go - to replace the current Media Manager.
4:08am : Designed for the digital lifestyle, 16GB internal flash memory, built-in wifi, bluetooth, etc. We'll have all the specs confirmed for you later (in case you didn't read them over the weekend).
4:07am : Like we saw with the DS/DSi from Nintendo, this is designed to live alongside the PSP-3000, rather than replacing it.
4:06am : ...I mean... PSP:Go :)
4:06am : They wanted to know how to make the PSP better, so they went around and asked a lot of people what they thought... the result of this questioning is designed for the modern person who is nearly totally digital: The Worst-Kept Secret of E3!
4:04am : Now... hello Kaz Hirai! You're looking very sensible this morning.
4:04am : Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines will be debuting very soon, as well as a lovely lilac PSP coming later as part of a girly bundle. Yay x2!
4:03am : Jack's back again, talking about - you guessed it - the PSP. Discussing games, bundles and content at this stage, but we all know what's coming.
4:02am : Somewhat surprisingly, the game is playable on the show-floor (promising full 256 players, too), and is coming out in "Fall" ("by the end of the year"), exclusively for PS3.
4:00am : ...at what point do you say "Well, it has 256 players, so we can't really expect the graphics to be stellar..."?
3:59am : Looks kinda Battlefield-esque, actually.
3:57am : Andy is here to show off MAG - Massive Action Game - this is the one with 256 players on the battlefield. He's going to show off *real* gameplay for the first time, ever. There's a couple of people who'll play it onstage, but other devs dotted around the country (Seattle, San Diego) are also playing.
3:57am : Looks pretty darn amazing, actually - as the trailer wraps up and Jack's back, saying that "only on PlayStation" doesn't mean "exclusive", it means "only possible on our console".
3:53am : Splody!
3:53am : Oo! Shooty!
3:52am : Multiplayer beta kicks off "at midnight tonight" (in about 12 hours) - and we're being shown some actual gameplay, very open-world, lovely colours. Looks a bit Assassin's Creed-y (isn't that the second time I've said that, this week?), but this is in no way a bad thing.
3:50am : Introducing Evan Wells from Naughty Dog onstage, to show off Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
3:49am : He's just suggested that the bags under people's eyes is due to playing inFamous since it came out - rather than that whole "being at a gaming convention" thing, which would have been my guess.
3:49am : More stats, talking about Latin America. Can't read the slides, don't really care all that much, tbh.
3:48am : ...he's just confirmed what we were all thinking: PS2 is a gateway drug to the serious console PS3. Heh.
3:48am : "PS2 remains the perfect family console," he says - and this year it'll get more than 100 new titles, including a bunch of new IP.
3:47am : ...anyway, let's look at the PS2. Current price point in the US: $99, and it outsold "next-gen systems" in that country last month - in its 9th year. Not bad, and Sony are now saying they don't see an end in sight for the console, despite their fabled 10 year life cycle.
3:46am : Currently listing a few big name titles - Heavy Rain got the biggest cheer, well ahead of seemingly bigger titles like MW2.
3:46am : 2008 was a record-breaking year (not sure which ones, exactly), and 2009 is shaping up to be just as good.
3:45am : They're still considering the PS2 to be a successful platform, interesting. This makes them the only company to have three successful consoles on the run - nice work :)
3:44am : Also amusing that he points out Sony pride themselves on outdoing their competitors - and the same applies to media leaks, heh.
3:44am : 364 games coming out on PlayStation platforms this year. (More than half: Singstar, seriously.)
3:43am : He's started off by thanking everybody for being here - given the leaks that have happened over the past week, he was surprised people believed there was still something worth showing up to see.
3:43am : Hello, Jack Tretton - President and CEO of Sony. You're looking well :)
3:41am : Oh, there we go. Typical Big-Name-Publisher montage video to start us off in the right mood.
3:29am : Cup of (green) tea acquired, settling in to watch this. Pre-show music sounds much more "Nintendo" than "Sony". Crossing fingers that the internets survives this conference...
3:21am : Almost ready to go in 10 minutes... but right now, my #1 priority is getting a cup of tea!
