[E3 2009] Nintendo Press Conference Liveblog E3 2009

Day 2 of E3 is at hand, with everything starting off bright and early with the Nintendo Press Conference. Just like the ones held earlier, we'll be liveblogging the whole thing, so not only can you catch up on what's going on, but you get some awesomely sleep-deprived commentary from yours truly!

Big N have already made a few revelations, but what else do they have up their sleeves for this week? My money's on lots of details about MotionPlus, but I'd also like to see something about Pikmin 3, even though I think it's still early days yet. And then there will be congratulatory chuckling over how well they have perfected their money-printing technique, with various levels of foreign accent.

LIVE BLOG:
(most recent event first)

Now, due to some unforeseen technical difficulties, I've had to blog half of the event by hand (gasp!), so the timestamps are missing (and there may be a section in the middle where I vagued out a bit during Iwata's presentation as I tried to figure out what was going on...). But, all the information is here and ready for your perusal - and trust me, there's some gems.
  • ...and that, my friends, is that! Thank you linesmen, thank you ball boys, the internets may have died partway through, but we got there in the end.

  • He's now talking about how Nintendo have a happy medium - using names that everybody recognises, but also introducing exciting new content and ideas, too.

  • "Cammie started today talking about 'surprise'," says Reggie - boasting that even the most seasoned Metroid fan will have been surprised by some of that trailer.

  • Team Ninja have done the Dead or Alive series, Ninja Gaiden, etc.

  • And yes, I'd say this all looks a bit more grown-up than running around a planet with a little plumber.

  • And yes, I'd say this all looks a bit more grown-up than running around a planet with a little plumber.

  • ...what's this? Something from Team Ninja + Nintendo, Project M presents... that looks like... could it be? METROID: OTHER M!

  • "Could a new, edgier game be coming from us?" Reggie asks - the answer (surprise) is "Yes" ...Nintendo are taking a "fresh look" at a story franchise, sounds like they're maybe stepping into the more "mature" gaming market?

  • Each of those games are playable on the show floor, yay!

  • ...and, um, Dead Space: Extraction. Looks like I jumped the gun a bit there celebrating that they were featuring an action game!

  • Ha. Following with that action title theme, let's take a look at that little Resident Evil thing... Darkside Chronicles.

  • The Conduit (which we know looks awesome) is coming, thanks to High Voltage and Sega. Nice move, showing off a bit of an action title for the platform, guys!

  • "I'll be honest, I read the blogs too," he says. He knows that gamers want more - and that "more" is generally something to do with publishers who aren't Nintendo. So, he's now showcasing a few third-party titles developed just for the Wii.

  • ...and Reggie steps back up to the stage, talking about how awesome they are, really, and recapping what we've just seen.

  • Yay! Super Mario Galaxy 2! That'll make a few people happy :)

  • Super Mario Galaxy 2? Lots of flying around and running and jumping and skill games and planety-looking-things...

  • For the first time, we're getting a second new 3D Mario title!

  • Cammie's back onstage now, talking about "stimulation", and Mario in particular. We've seen him a few times this morning - but that's not all.

  • Games are designed both to excite and to relax, Iwata says. Possibly the new peripheral (which it doesn't look like we'll see in action!) will measure how effective these games are (or aren't).

  • I'm skeptical. It could be awesome, but... how will it work with games, exactly? Unless maybe something will increase with your heart rate...

  • ...looks like something you'd get clipped onto your finger in a hospital. Iwata explains that that's pretty much what it is - measuring your pulse and other bodily functions (how nervous am i? etc).

  • "Most of the names we talked about today are familiar even to non-gamers," he says. Brain Age, Wii Fit... what's next? A new, entirely different way of thinking about games. Brain Age exercises your brain, Wii Fit exercises your body... this is now the Wii Vitality Sensor!

  • He's still talking about non-gamers and how to best approach them.

  • (taking a little bit of time to find out what's going on with the website, sorry)

  • 295 million people are considered "actively playing". / 149 million people are "potential players".

  • "There are some who believe the audience expansion movement is starting to fade," he says, as he explains that Nintendo thinks there are three kinds of people in the world. Active gamers, those who never game, and those who say they "might" game. Their focus is - of course - on the "maybes"."There are some who believe the audience expansion movement is starting to fade," he says, as he explains that Nintendo thinks there are three kinds of people in the world. Active gamers, those who never game, and those who say they "might" game. Their focus is - of course - on the "maybes".

  • Now... to welcome global president: Satoru Iwata. Hello! He speaks so cute.

  • "In our world, everyone's game," she concludes.

  • ...but as much as people enjoy their own content, they enjoy "proper" games as well (okay, she didn't say that, but it's what she meant), so now she's talking about The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, which is playable on the show floor.

  • Discussion about how you will be able to automatically upload images from your DSi (yawn) ...to Facebook (yay!).

  • WarioWare: DIY (as in: "Do it Yourself" says Cammie) is another DS/i title that makes you the game developer. Looks pretty nifty - you can create and share your own DIY projects, looks like a pretty powerful little game editor.

  • Also - Mario vs Donkey Kong looks like something where the level designer is the game (I may have misinterpreted), but there are also minigames for "the minis" to play and puzzle out. Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again - DSiWare title, available this coming Monday (in the US, at least).

  • FlipNote Studio will be made available (to US DSi owners) in "Summer" of this year - allowing people to make little films.

  • The DSi was designed to complement the DS-lite, as they are different platforms, price point etc - they've sold 1 million DSi consoles since launch; but also 400,000 DS Lite in the same timeframe. To translate: Yes, they do print money.

  • "Nintendo is already grabbing the passion of players," Cammy says - and throws to footage of vox pops, talking about the DS and DSi.

  • Shifting focus yet again - Style Savvy will further expand female gameplay for "pre teens and 20-somethings" (because you know those two demographics have so much in common). It's a paper-doll style game, with a whole pile of customisation option - if that means nothing, you should probably walk away now, you'll hate it.

  • "Women's Murder Club might appeal to new gamers," says Cammie - but then tells us that COP, from Ubisoft, will be of more interest to the more seasoned, hardcore gamer. It looks... interesting. Shades of GTA, perhaps?

  • "If there is a current king of mystery writing, it's probably James Patterson," she says - introducing Women's Murder Club: Games of Passion from THQ, explaining that it plays - and reads - like an interactive novel, and is designed for gamers and the dreaded non-gamer.

  • There are more than 100 million DS in the wild - which means developers can take a bit more of a risk.

  • (More gameplay footage, before Cammie takes the stage again.)

  • "A legendary RPG name is on its way back to Nintendo's portable," he says. 2010 will see the triumphant return - a new dawn - Golden Sun DS.

  • ...we've just been shown a bunch of gameplay footage: It's for DS, and looks pretty much like you'd expect. Apparently it's been out in Japan for a while - and will be released in North America and Europe (and Australia?) "this Fall".

  • "Bowser really does suck," but he's getting his own game again - the latest Luigi RPG: Bowser's Inside Story - which sees Mario & Luigi swallowed by our favourite enemy, and then getting to explore his insides.
(technical difficulties, please stand by...)
2:05am : Watching a video of the Crystal Bearers... and now being told about a new Kingdom Hearts, which is looking a bit swanky.

2:03am : Now we're looking at RPG genre, just for something completely different. "RPGs allow developers to vary their approach," Reggie says. Predictably, this is a throw to some news about the Final Fantasy franchise.

2:02am : The way he's stressing that Red Steel 2 will only be playable with MotionPlus kinda implies that the other sports games won't necessarily need the plug-in.

2:02am : There's a bunch of sports games that are coming with the controller packed in - including Sega's Virtua Tennis.

2:01am : And it's coming sooner than expected - WiiMotion Plus will be in the US in July. Stay tuned for more local news :)

2:00am : Ooh, it's not playing basketball, it's a basket-shooting competition. Two grown men on stage miming throwing balls through hoops, with little white controllers strapped to their wrists. Actually looks kinda fun, if you're into that sport thing :)

1:58am : Reggie's back on stage, and there's some trash talk as they both get kitted up to play basketball.

1:56am : Now we look at archery, which uses the nunchuck. Wiimote is the bow, nunchuck is the arrow you have to pull back. There's wind and distance and other fun stuff that makes the game trickier for you.

1:55am : You can go skydiving - and use the WiiMote to basically represent "you" as you fall out of the sky, in formation. Heh.

1:54am : Ah, the gentleman they introduced before is back - he's Bill Trinen, who was best known as a video game translator, who's obviously transitioned a bit into PR :)

1:53am : Each of the sports featured is included in Wii Sports Resort (also revealed last year).

1:52am : Actually, that's kinda cool. Very Japanese footage of people using table tennis paddles, katana, high-precision bow, golf club etc... and the instrument is replaced by the Wiimote+MotionPlus, showing off the 1:1 movement response.

1:50am : Ooh, a video showing off how it works :)

1:50am : ...it's still a little extender to click onto the bottom of your standard WiiMote, to improve the accuracy of the controller. This was introduced last year, and doesn't look like it's changed much :)

1:49am : "The primary weapon" for Nintendo's gaming at the moment is "interface". First the wiimote, then the nunchuck, then the balance board... today, the next advance in game control: MotionPlus!

1:48am : Hello, Reggie Fils-Aime!

1:47am : Wii Fit Plus: available Fall 2009 (that's Australian Spring).

1:47am : "This is the first time you'll really be able to understand how it feels to run a mile in Mario's shoes" - with some games looking very much like Mario levels.

1:46am : "At the same time, this can't be only about fitness" - 15 new balance games... including "Brain Age for your backside" :)

1:46am : Handful of new yoga/strength exercises added, and a calorie-burning counter.

1:45am : Finally! You can enter the "locker room" and design your own workout program from start to finish - without any middle interludes, and using any exercises you want.

1:44am : So they've started to look at how they can make Wii Fit more attractive for everybody - the result (surprise surprise) is Wii Fit Plus.

1:44am : Some analysts have stopped looking at the balance board as a mere "peripheral", and are now looking at it as a "platform" - as it has sales figures / install base up there with fully-blown consoles.

1:43am : Cammie's back again now, talking about how people who never play video games still step onto the Wii Fit board.

1:43am : Lookin' good!

1:43am : Looks like old-school classic Mario style aesthetics, with a bit of an SSBB feel to it.

1:41am : Drop in / drop out co-op - can call your friends over for help if you get partway through and find it too tricky.

1:41am : 4 player co-op, sort of like a Super Smash Bros. You can work happily with your partners, or you can let them die early and pick up all the coins yourself.

1:40am : ...there's now a gentleman on stage talking about the game... and apparently a major difference is "the number of players" ... 1-4 players, with item boxes producing one item for each player in the game - but not always.

1:39am : And there we go: New Super Mario Bros. For Wii has been officially announced, as we'd anticipated.

1:38am : "Mario in 3D was great," she says - "but we admit we haven't quite figured out how to move him into a 4th dimension" ...apparently the number "4" is the key to the next big surprise. Miyamoto has been working on this for 15 years, apparently.

1:38am : Kicking things of on that second point, Cammie is now talking about a video game icon who seems to have already done it all: a certain little fat plumber.

1:37am : ...we're discussing how Nintendo are still focussing a bit on the non-gamer - in fact, they're concentrating on "innovation" and "surprises where you thought there wouldn't be any left".

1:36am : "Perhaps you've noticed a woman on the plane playing her Nintendo DS?" ...yes, I did. She didn't seem to understand the concept of a headphone jack and was filling the cabin with dinky tunes. Not Nintendo's fault, of course.

1:36am : Apparently video games are ridiculously popular these days - who knew?

1:35am : Introducing Cammie Dunaway - the executive vice president of sales & marketing for Nintendo - and she's breaking with this year's tradition, talking stats.

1:33am : ...and with the strains of U2 filtering through the speakers, it's time for Night 2 of our liveblogging E3 coverage - Nintendo's Press Conference!
