[E3 2009] Now Playing - E3 2009 Special: Day 0
By Steven Perdikis - Mon Jun 1, 2009 6:30pm
E3 is about to get underway in sunny Los Angeles, and even before the event has started, we've got our hands on enough trailers to bring you a special edition of Now Playing. We'll continue to bring you special editions of Now Playing each evening, as more and more trailers are released in Los Angeles.
Today, we begin the festivities by heralding the arrival of a chivalrous knight, who witnesses a scantily clad woman fighting enemies with a cheesy British accent. Then, we'll take a step across the English Channel for some good ol' WWII sabotage. Then, we take another quick look at what it is like to be a Space Marine, before finally ending our E3 precursor with with some associates that can be considered to be bad company.

White Knight Chronicles is one game that all PlayStation 3 owners who consider themselves fans of the RPG should be very interested in. For one, it is developed by Level-5, who were responsible for arguably the best PlayStation Portable Strategy RPG on the market, Jeanne d'Arc. Secondly, it looks to be the only quality JRPG that we'll see on the black monolith for some time. The trailer explains the plot of White Knight Chronicles far better than any words could possibly do, showing off some rather impressive visuals, and making this newsbot excited about the future of his often neglected PlayStation 3.

At last year's E3 a teaser trailer for Bayonetta, along with many promises from Hideki Kamiya (the creator of Resident Evil and Devil May Cry) got this bitter newsbot excited about the future of third person action games on the current generation of consoles. Sadly, as more English language trailers for the game have been released, I can't help but cringe every time the cheesy British accent and focus on suggestive language detracts so much from the actual action content that we've been promised. Nevertheless, the E3 trailer for Bayonetta shows off some of the in game action that we'll be able to engage in... hopefully at some point this year.

World War II wasn't all about D-Day, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. In France, a bunch of resistance fighters attempted to sabotage the German forces occupying the country. Some were successful, others were not. While life continued for most French people as normal, those who joined the resistance played a major part in helping the allies secure victory in Europe during the war. While some people may believe that one man (or woman) does not make a difference in any war, it looks as though Saboteur will contest this train of thought, allowing players to take part in the resistance (and hopefully!) drive back the occupying German force to support the allied push into Europe.

The Warhammer 40,000 universe is something which is bloody, violent, and a frantic fight for survival, where every moment of every living day is full of the prospect of war. Every day is a struggle, and the Space Marine is on the front line of the battle against the prospect of human extinction. While the text you've just read sounds hauntingly familiar to the trailer you're about to (re-watch), the truth of the matter is, there's no better way to describe the role of a Space Marine (You could cite Tac Spam, and Thunder (Ban) Hammers, but that would be too obscure). While Relic are working on balancing Dawn of War II, it looks like that their console entry will satisfy those who prefer instant gratification and carving through countless enemies over those who prefer deft strikes and winning small skirmishes against all odds. Prepare to be a one man army.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will see the Battlefield make another return to the consoles. Unfortunately, this E3 trailer is actually half defence, which excludes my from trying to rename the game Battlefield: Bad Trailer, but it won't try to stop me from attempting to capitalise on corny jokes (c'mon, this is Now Playing!) The trailer looks fairly epic, and if that's the sort of stuff we can expect to see while actually playing the game (including team-mate coordination and pretty explosions), then it looks like the game could drop bombshells onto multiplayer FPS as we currently know it.

As it is E3 Week, we just can't bring ourselves to demean trailers to the status of "Didn't Make the Cut", which regularly graces Now Playing each week. To celebrate this, we've introduced a special After Hours Screening session, in which you can view all the trailers that didn't make it into Now Playing proper. They're all on the mirror, and ready for you to download or stream.
