Weekly Digest - 01/06/09
Each week, we collate the most popular stories that we published over the past seven days, plus a lineup of the most downloaded files added in the same timeframe. That way, in case you missed something, you can catch up in one helpful little spot, every Monday morning.

Of course, E3 was a pretty major focus over the past few days, but before that, everybody wanted to know more more more about Modern Warfare 2, with a very lovely new trailer and screens. Then there was the introduction to The Fallen, from Diablo III, the news that Sexy Poker has been banned in Australia, Team Fortress 2 was updated (yet again), and our first look at the latest handheld console development: the PSP Go, from Sony.

Plus! We're giving away a copy of BioShock for PS3, complete with a limited edition Little Sister figurine!

Modern Warfare 2 visual spectacular: First Trailer, First Screens

We've been waiting so very patiently for the next tidbit of information about Modern Warfare 2 and today I have for you a pretty juicy morsel indeed!
Two weeks ago, we had a very brief glimpse of what gameplay would be like - a mere 20 seconds of footage full of helicopters, explosions, scuba divers and snowmobiles - but today's offering is truly something you can sink your teeth into. It's two minutes worth of official trailer, which we have ready for you to watch right now! (If you'd like some non-moving pics, we've also got first-look screenshots now too.)

Diablo III: New screenshots pick up The Fallen

Normally, long weekends in the US mean that we get no new news for a few days. Apparently, this Memorial Day weekend is bucking the trend just a little, and we are inundated with cool stuff. Sure to please many gamers is this latest update from Blizzard, who have taken the opportunity to tell us all about The Fallen Ones - featured in the latest Bestiary Update for Diablo III.
If you've played a bit of Diablo II, then some of these might look a bit familiar - there's the Imp and Shaman - but there's also the Overseer, Lunatic and the Hound to make up the fearsome Fallen fivesome.

Sexy Poker a bit too naughty for Australia

It took the Classification Board until a few months into 2009 to officially declare a game unsuitable for Australians, but it's only been six weeks and already, the second head is rolling.
This time, it's somewhat less surprising, with the Board deciding that WiiWare title Sexy Poker "offers depictions of nudity as an incentive or reward to interactive gameplay" - and thus, has announced the game is Refused Classification. We've gotten our hands on the report from the Classification Board and can tell you exactly why it was banned (in case you needed a hint, it's probably not the sort of thing you should read at work).

Team Fortress 2: Another Day, Another Update

As if we hadn't had enough updating fun with Team Fortress 2 recently, there's yet another patch out today, which contains a bunch of fixes that may help your gaming experience. It's available now, simply by restarting your Steam client.
We've also got some details on the new achievement system, which many gamers are now considering to be "ruined". Valve have gone on the record explaining why they felt the new system was necessary, and how it all works. Plus, we have details about Hoodoo, and pictures of the new hats! Yay!

PSP Go revealed a little earlier than expected

It just wouldn't be E3 without something major being leaked in the leadup to the show, right?
Well, this year's shaping up to be a good'un, with footage, pictures and specs of Sony's latest handheld console making their way onto the Internets a few days before the official announcement. That's right, the long-rumoured PSP Go has been confirmed, and you'll be seeing a lot more of it this week.

Batman: Arkham Asylum resident, Poison Ivy steps into spotlight

As those who are waiting for the game with bated breath may already know, Batman: Arkham Asylum has been delayed until September. While the delay is probably disappointing, the delay is also a good thing, with Rocksteady Studios able to use the extended development time to polish the game.
It has also allowed the studio to release many more trailers introducing the villains of the game which the player, as the Caped Crusader, must fight. The latest of these introduces us to Poison Ivy, who is able to control plants.

Battlefield 1943 heads to the Coral Sea with your help

Everybody, gather 'round. DICE wants you to take part in a massive community event for Battlefield 1943 when it launches this winter. They've just announced a fourth map for the game, Coral Sea, but when you buy the game, it will be locked away where you can't get to it.
If you want a chance to play this new WWII map, then you'd better have your trigger finger ready - it'll only unlock when the multiplayer community has achieved 43M kills on PlayStation Network, and the same number on Xbox Live ...until that happens, you'll only have three maps to play on: Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal and Wake Island. Take a look at what you're missing out on, with this new Coral Sea trailer!

Logitech reveal "Black Edition" of Wireless Guitar Controller for PS3

Those who are fond of the Guitar Hero series often have many things to say about the plastic peripherals that are packaged with the games. These things usually aren't all that good, and the ears of Logitech have picked this up, today announcing the Black Edition of its Wireless Guitar Controller that is compatible with the PlayStation 3 and 2 platforms.

FUEL gets a world record for largest game environment

The developers of FUEL, French studio Asobo have been awarded the Guinness World Record (for video games) for the "Largest playable area in a console game". But just how large is it? 5,560 square miles, 14,400 square kilometres, with almost every inch of the gameworld accessible to players.
To celebrate their entry to the Gamer's Edition of the Guinness World Records, Asobo have released a trailer that shows off the engine and technology behind such an incredible expanse.

Mass Effect 2 - some more snippets of what to expect

Earlier this month, we brought you the first real glimpse at Bioware's eagerly anticipated Mass Effect 2. Today, we've got some more information for your eager ears.
While a bunch of information regarding the title is expected to seep out from E3, some details regarding the game have made their way onto the Internet by way of some lucky magazine subscribers who have received July issues of the Official Xbox Magazine early.

Natural Selection 2 is coming - this year

Natural Selection 2 is coming. Developers of the title, Unknown Worlds have begun releasing more teasers for the game, this time in the form of trailer.
While it has been in development for a very long time, (and is even considered vapour-ware by some) it looks like the game is finally nearing release, and is due this Spring, according to the developer's website.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Xbox 360 Review)

The blockbuster movie season is upon us, and as you would expect, many of the big name game publishers are there with video game tie-ins ready to go. Leading off the season is X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Activision’s third attempt at producing a game to run alongside an X-Men film. Since they were batting none from two, both critically and commercially with X-Men movie games, Activision brought in the big guns, namely Raven Software, to work on their Wolverine game. The result is a solid character action game which makes a strong initial impression, but really starts to wear out its welcome well before the credits roll.

Diablo III - The fallen get animated

Recently we introduced you to some of The Fallen Ones from Diablo III. Today, we've gotten our hands on a brief trailer that frees The Fallen from their concept art prison, showing off a short (some times cute) animations of the creatures in action.
The trailer shows off the Imp, Shaman, Lunatic, Hound, and the Overseer offering a very tiny insight towards the demonic hordes that players will need to destroy in order to achieve their goals in Diablo III.

Terminator Salvation (PS3 Review)

Let's get the facts straight. Terminator Salvation is not a “movie game”. It is a “prequel game”. Set two years before the film of the same name, the game is related to the “movie game” stereotype, but not subject to the same levels of predictable horror which have forever plagued video game movie tie-ins. This doesn't mean that it is a good game, as it still suffers many of the problems associated with “movie games”, but to a lesser extent than expected.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising - the E3 trailer has arrived!

With E3 fast approaching, in the coming days you can expect to see a lot of trailers from upcoming games hit the mirror. One of the latest of these is from the upcoming military "sim" Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.
The Operation Flashpoint E3 2009 Trailer is one of these, showing off in-game footage and some of the toys would-be-soldiers will get to play with when the game finally releases in September this year. While it doesn't reveal much new about the game, the trailer is sure to make those waiting for the game happy.
