Now Playing (26/05/09)
With E3 just around the corner, Now Playing is bracing itself against a soon-to-be overflowing barrage of trailers and new games. So, in this last week of relative quiet in the lead up to E3 we've got yet another weekly dose of trailers, good, bad, and even the simply terrible, accompanied with the bitter, sad ranting of a disillusioned newsbot.

This week, Games On Net invites you to enter a much disputed ring, before stepping out onto centre court. After that, we'll visit an island where the road toll is amusingly low. Then, we'll visit the flood ravaged locale of most of Australia Venice. Finally, we get some laughs from a simulated parody.

UFC 2009 Undisputed

Mixed martial arts is a big thing, apparently. So is UFC 2009 Undisputed, which is out now, and appeals to people who like beating the sense out of other people, in a competitive manner. The launch trailer for the title is almost poetic in its depiction of all things violent, and should get the right sort of people in the mood to go and buy the game, or, if they have no money, to beat the store clerk senseless and take it home anyway. (Games On Net does not condone this behaviour, and never will.)

EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis

As we all know, there isn't nearly enough Tennis games on the Nintendo Wii. EA have vowed to enter the Wii Tennis market with EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis, and they've brought all their possible pennies along for the ride, enlisting John McEnroe, and his mantra of "You cannot be serious" to help promote the game. There's tennis, there's (presumably) in-jokes and catch cries everywhere, and as can be seen in the trailer, lots of sponsorship and in-game advertising.

Burnout Paradise

It is hard to believe that Criterion Games are still working on improving Burnout Paradise. Their next big burning project is "Big Surf Island", which will introduce new cars, new areas, new stunts, and as usual an obsessively large amount of content. While it looks like the newest bunch of content will set you back some money, let's all remember that the guys who work at the studio do have to eat, and they've provided oh so much for free before the most recent packs. Add to the fact that the game is actually fun, I mean, who doesn't like causing hundred car pile ups and getting rewarded for it?

Venetica

Video games, television, and novels have taught me one thing. Romantic Europe is such a beautiful place, that it is little wonder why so many developers choose to set so many games there (and have so many studios in the region). Venetica is a game set in Venice, where Death walks side by side with the living, killing and slaughtering those upset an ancient council known as Corpus. The latest recruit to assume the role of Death, however just happens to be a necromancer, and things go sour. Like all people, he's got an agenda, and his is to rid the world of all human life. Enter our hero, Scarlett, daughter of Death, and would be hero. While the trailer doesn't say all that much about the actual game, the pretty locations are nice to look at all the same.

The Sims 3

The Sims 3 will sell a lot of copies, the time prophet has foreseen. It even has other awesome things outside of the core game play too. Such other awesome things include a video editor! This will no doubt make Machinima devotees ecstatic, and by the looks of this Trek Parody it seems that the video editor will be a lot of fun to play with, and if this is the sort of stuff you can easily pull off using it, then, I'm kind of reluctant to admit it, but I want The Sims 3. Let us ignore for the moment that I've never seen Star Trek, and only played the first game in the series, but the trailer made me actually laugh. It is awesome. It makes me want the game more than the whole "you can kill virtual people in demeaning ways!", even if you're only planning to aspire to a single career in your very own virtual life (from a virtually staggering pool of possibilities). As for me, my Sim will be a virtual writer will continue to grow even more bitter by the day, smothered by the sands of time and deadlines falling from the sky, living a reclusive life ... and seeking a better day, until they come to the life shattering realisation that...*snip*

Didn't Make the Cut
While there are literally hundreds of trailers released for games each week, some simply don't make the cut, or try so hard to be good, that I like to make it an effort for those who really want to see them.

This week's pick is the Killzone 2 'Flash and Thunder DLC' Trailer. While it is a "good" game, according to countless reviews aligning themselves with this point of view... Why do developers keep thinking that the only thing people want post-release is more and more multiplayer content? Why can't they for instance, treat those who like to enjoy something all by themselves? Only the gods can answer such a plea. In any case The Flash and Thunder map pack for the game gives players new maps, in exchange for some money, and is accompanied with some Stalin-esque propaganda from one of the game's characters. While I've not played it - (let's admit it, the single player demo released way back screamed of generic shooter) I really just can't see what all the fuss is about when it comes to Killzone 2.

If that's not to your tastes, you can always check out some of the finely crafted, hand picked trailers listed below.
