Dissidia: Final Fantasy shows off new screens
It seems to be shaping up as quite a good year for the conjunction of PSP owner and Japanese games fanboy. One of the titles sure to separate us from our money is Dissidia: Final Fantasy, an arena-based fighter slightly reminiscent of PSOne title Ergheiz, in that regardless of your appreciation of fighting game mechanics, Square Enix will extract cash from you just so you can enjoy the appearance of Final Fantasy characters. Releasing in all PAL territories in the next two months, here are some pretty new screens to celebrate!

Dissidia combines traditional arena based fighting mechanics with Square Enix (as usual) going over the top with character abilities, allowing moves in which you fly through the air or dash across walls, and also incorporates traditional RPG elements in the form of character development.

A special move called EX Burst allows you to call on familiar super-powers such as limit breaks, overdrives, and even summons. All this is wrapped up in a classic good versus evil story incorporating favourite heroes and villains, often notoriously more popular than some of their antagonists, set against familiar locations and music from Final Fantasy titles. PSP exclusive, the game takes advantage of its host's particular strengths by including multiplayer functionality via the wireless link, from versus battles to the collecting and trading of game cards.

I wonder if Dissidia will win community service awards? My theory is, being able to play as Final Fantasy characters that you actually like, and beat up all the ones you really dislike (see Squall Vs Tidus screen below), will enable players to work out all their anxieties in this area. This will in turn reduce the amount of terrible fan fiction being written purely for the purpose of killing off unpopular characters. Any dam, however minor, in that flood is probably worth a medal.

Looking much shinier and action packed than the repetitive Crisis Core, the only other Final Fantasy title on the PSP to date that has not been a remake or re-release, Dissidia: Final Fantasy is due this Spring to answer to all your prayers at the Square Enix altar.
