Now Playing (17/03/09)
Welcome this week's instalment of Now Playing, where we take your hand and lead you into a darkened theatre, one filled with dust, cobwebs and the addled rants of a veteran gamer. Inside this magical theatre, you'll see the most irresistibly interesting, marvellously magnificent, or downright dire trailers from recently released or upcoming games.

This week, we shall fight with repetition, before falling into a radioactive pitt. Then we go to a galaxy, far far away, then we return to a war-torn Earth, to engage in a bit of sizzling boxing.

Velvet Assassin

World War II is a much used setting for video games. Velvet Assassin attempts to break the mould of fighting nazi-zombies by placing the player into the shoes of Violette Summer, a British MI6 agent who, working alone and undercover embarks on a number of highly secretive Sabotage missions which lead to visits across a number of picturesque, war-torn European locales such France, Russia, Norway and Germany. At each location, Summer carves a patch of bloody murder, sabbotage and and infiltration, all the while chanting a mantra of "We shall fight in the ". Whether the game will actually be good isn't yet-known, but the setting is and we shall find out soon enough, when the shall infiltrate stores, where it shall sell copies, where it shall sold, where it shall be picked up, where it shall be taken home, where it shall finally be played. Shall you download the trailer?

Fallout 3

Sometimes, I hate Bethesda. While they do make awesome games that have incredible depth and scope, I rarely find the time to actually complete them. Then, as if to spite me with more gamer-shame, they proceed to release downloadable content and expansions for them, which make me weep because a) they cost money, and b) they add more gameplay to a game that I've barely even scratched the surface off in the first place. This week, they've unveiled a new trailer for the upcoming downloadable content for Fallout 3 The Pitt, which sees everyone's favourite vault dweller descend into yet another generic, radioactive hole, complete with new characters, weapons, plot and gameplay, for the lowly sum of 800 Micro-caps on the PC and Xbox 360.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Unlike my love / hate relationship with Bethesda, BioWare are one game development studio that have had my faithful, unerring, unconditional love and support since I can remember being able to afford PC games shortly after the acquisition of my first PC. While their latest outing steps into the mud-filled pit that is MMORPG land, it doesn't make me any less excited. The latest development diary for Star Wars: The Old Republic details what we can expect in terms of story and character development, with a number of folk from Bioware on hand to provide commentary on important manners of intergalactic importance.

Armed Assault 2

It seems that Now Playing can never escape having at least one game featured that isn't about a war of some sort. This week, the service medal goes to Armed Assault 2. In the new "National Party" Trailer, a news-report from the fictional near-future conflict depicted in the game is presented using in-game footage which shows off the game's engine and unravels some of the information pertaining to the game's plot. While I'm sure the political context of a conflict is very important for the establishment of back story, I imagine I'm not alone when saying, "just please, please, please, show us some pretty explosions?" - or is that too much to ask for?

Fight Night: Round 4

"All the talk is done, it is simply time to fight", proclaims the new trailer, for Fight Night:Round 4 which features boxing legends Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson brought to life in 3D form in all their rippling, muscled glory. Their only objective: knock each other unconscious. The trailer features some amazing graphics which are allegedly real time, in which Tyson and Ali, both in the prime of their careers, duke it out in a no holds barred punch-out.

Didn't Make the Cut
While there is literally hundreds of trailers released for games each week, some simply don't make the cut, or try so hard to be good, that I like to make it an effort for those who really want to see them.

This week's pick is the Dexter: The Videogame Teaser Trailer which comes from the TV series of the same name, which I've never seen. It seems like it could be fun though - there's humour, serial killings, and blood. What more could you want? If that's not to your tastes, you can always check some of the finely crafted, hand picked trailers listed below.
