Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles to terrify Wii later this year

Friday 13th, time for more horror announcements guys. The latest of which comes from our friends at Capcom who want to terrify Wii owners, again - with the announcement of Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.

Following on from Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, the Darkside Chronicles allows players new and old to experience a story based on Resident Evil 2, focusing on the characters of Leon S. Kenney and Claire Redfield. The game will be presented in the same spirit as Umbrella Chronicles (an "on-rails") shooter, and will cover ground that the original title did not address.

Capcom have also announced plans to bring a line of Resident Evil "Classics" products to the Wii - which, in sheer, cackling disregard for the console's backwards compatibility will see the release of several GameCube Resident Evil "classics" on the platform, in a bid to introduce the Resident Evil universe to a new generation of gamers.

In Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles players will be able to "re-live" (and most likely perish) once more through the "most memorable moments of the Resident Evil franchise", with the game to feature "extreme shooting gameplay" and "interactive pathways".

Players will be able to take on their enemies in Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles by enlisting the help of a single, A.I controlled character, or beg, bribe and abduct their Wii-less friends to engage in an arcade-styled zombie-massacre, complete with a new "Evade" system that will use the Wii-mote and will most likely involve the flailing of limbs in a hilarious or suggestive manner.

Initial images for the title look impressive for the Nintendo Wii - but it is unclear as to whether the images are pre-rendered or taken from in-game footage. For those who've lost, sold-off or otherwise disposed of their GameCube versions of various Resident Evil titles, Capcom have promised to reveal more information regarding the newly announced Resident Evil "Classics" in the coming months. The "Classics" collection will include re-makes of Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero, with both titles optimised to support the Wii Remote.

At the moment, no firm release date for Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles has been announced, but the title can be expected to hit PAL regions in the next Australian Summer. It will be available exclusively on the Nintendo Wii.
