Split/Second to crash onto PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in early 2010
Racing games usually mean a healthy offering of motion blur, and rarely include fireballs and explosions. In early 2010, Disney Interactive and Black Rock Studio intend to make that all change with the newly announced Split/Second - which will be released on the PC, PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.

Split/Second is set within a reality TV show, where competitors are tasked with a simple objective - cross the finish line of a racing circuit before someone else does. To unveil the title, a brief, but action packed trailer has been released, along with two screenshots.

With no apparent rules or consequences, contestants are encouraged to slam into other vehicles, trigger explosive events, and complete a variety of other nefarious deeds such as destroying bridges and other objects in a bid to maintain the lead.

Split/Second is currently in development at Black Rock Studio - the same guys who worked on Pure - so it is fairly safe to assume that they know what they're doing with the title. Nick Baynes director of Split/Second explains what the company is trying to achieve with the new title:
We’re creating huge memorable moments on par with the biggest blockbuster action films. Action racing has captured the imagination of video game fans worldwide and we’re going to redefine that experience with Split/Second.

Meanwhile, Craig Relyea - Senior Vice President of Marketing at Disney Interactive Studios explained some of the game's mechanics:
Split/Second elevates action racing to a new level by enabling players to strategically take out their opponents by dynamically altering the course in real time. Split/Second further showcases Black Rock Studio’s ability to innovate and deliver a compelling experience that has wide appeal beyond the traditional racing genre.
The game isn't due until early 2010 which means there is likely to be a lot more information regarding this one released before it crashes into store shelves, leaving fiery-balls of death and collapsed bridges in its wake. We will keep you informed as we learn more.
