Now Playing (10/03/2009)
By Steven Perdikis - Tue Mar 10, 2009 6:30pm
Welcome this week's instalment of Now Playing, where we take your hand and lead you into a darkened theatre. Inside, you'll see the most irresistibly interesting, marvellously magnificent, or downright dire trailers from recently released or upcoming games.
This week, we embark on a rage-filled journey to a certain-town, then speculate upon some cold war rivalry, next, we go on a dance-floor date with Stalin and then attempt to bat-away circular, inevitable war before finally relaxing by rounding up sheep in the atomic aftermath that follows.

Video game developers seem to hate me. This week, we have a shiny new trailer for Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, which much like last week's Resident Evil 5 'Sniper' Trailer advertises 'Sniping' as its main draw card, yet features very little sniping. In addition, the Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars 'Sniper' Trailer has the potential to provoke bitter tears for two reasons - it shows off some game play footage that looks engaging and fun, but does it in such a stupid, limiting way that makes you really have to... make some sort of effort to decipher what is going on inside a tiny window that rotates annoyingly, obscuring the game's otherwise stylish graphics.

War. It is the subject of lots of games. The Cold War, in fact, has been the subject of a lot of recent games, with Codename: Panzers Cold War soon to be the latest conscript to join a parade of millitary-might on the manner. The new trailer for the title shows off a bunch of in-game action, complete with obscure camera angles, unit chevrons, and speculative text-pop-ups that question and challenge you, the viewer. What would have happened if the Cold War erupted into a luke-warm conflict - according to this new trailer, a lot of pretty explosions and flanking manoeuvres would have eventuated. A crane would collapse, and a bomb would drop, and there would be little rejoicing, and helicopters, and explosions, and gunfire, and all the other marvellous stuff that comes with war, including RTS games.

It is time to dance, comrade. Dance in the field of battle that sees the charismatic Soviet leader, Stalin fight Martians. In New trailer, Soviet Comrades see disco-time come to you, in a "trashy and absolutely over-the-top" RTS filled with hilarity. While the trailer lacks vodka, and some other Soviet / Russian stereo-types, it has Stalin, dancing. And some gameplay footage where the Soviet forces (possibly) try to stop the invading Martian forces from breaching their distilleries and discovering the power of DANCE that is only made possible through potato-like-beverages.

Halo Wars. It is a console RTS, need I say more? Actually, yes I do - In the new 'Universe Expanded' trailer, a number of developers and industry-commentators explain the inclusion of several units in the game, and speak about the Halo franchise's ability to print money in awed tones. Well, not really, but Halo Wars is most likely going to sell a lot of copies and make some people somewhat rich, while also transforming the Halo universe into something so much-more all-encompassing. What's next, I wonder, a Mario Kart clone using the Halo vehicles?

Capcom announced Flock some time ago. It's designed as a casual, accessible game where the player assumes the role of a spacecraft, in an attempt to herd sheep and other live-stock in a variety of interactive (and hopefully) entertaining levels. Sheep, being stubborn and difficult creatures by nature, will attempt to avoid the players efforts of establishing order and organisation, allowing the gamer to exploit a physics engine that will provide hours of puzzling fun and achievements for all. The new trailer shows off the various seasons that the game will shift through - which with any luck will also alter the behaviour of livestock and not just a RGB colour value in an xml table somewhere in the game's code.

While there is literally hundreds of trailers released for games each week, some simply don't make the cut, or try so hard to be good, that I like to make it an effort for those who really want to see them.Didn't Make the Cut
