Wireless SingStar arrives in April

Let's do "Big Butts", mum loves that.
A lot of games sell themselves by promising to deliver the technology of tomorrow - today! SingStar, on the other hand, has just earned a big round of applause from party-game addicts by delivering the technology of, um, today - after a significant delay. Perhaps in response to criticism, perhaps because the release of Microsoft's challenger, Lips, has broken the complacent mood over at Sony, the PS3 edition of SingStar will see a much needed update this April with the release of wireless microphones.

The new hardware has already been available for testing in other territories for a little while, and the response from users and critics has been positive. Not surprising, really, as the original peripherals, usable on both PS2 and PS3, were well up to their tasks, and the addition of wireless support hopefully shouldn't alter their feel or function too drastically. Sadly - or, in the case of my friends' dancing ability, thankfully - the new microphones will not feature motion sensing, although you can still plug in your Playstation Eye or Eyetoy and enjoy watching yourself bounce around the screen pretending to be Madonna.

Also in the works for the franchise that turns your console into a karaoke session is a new release titled SingStar Pop Edition and a couple of hundred new tracks in the online store. Unfortunately for PS3 fans, SingStar is still dragging the chain behind its Xbox cousin, with no news as to when we might be able to use our own music collections - although given how the Australian public seems unable to get enough of SingStar Abba, maybe we're happy enough with the regular release of compilation titles.

Both SingStar Pop Edition and the new wireless microphones hit the stores in early April.
