Coming Attractions - 18/02/2009
Everybody loves street date breakages and mass delays, both of which have affected this week’s Coming Attractions slightly. Street Fighter IV is out on shelves now for everyone to buy and love, and word is that both Dawn of War II andThe House of the Dead: Overkill can be found in some stores. Atari too decided to mess with us all this week, delaying their entire slate of titles planned for this week, so anyone planning on killing some vampires in thigh-high boots will have to wait til next week.

Don’t forget to check out the full release schedule for the latest changes and information on upcoming games.

Grand Theft Auto 4: The Lost and Damned
Platform: Xbox 360
Developer: Rockstar North
Publisher: Rockstar Games
RRP: 1600 Microsoft Points online ($AU26.40) or $AU34.95 in stores

Someone young and stupid forgot about the biggest downloadable content release of the year when he produced the last edition of Coming Attractions. Take on the role of Johnny Klebitz, member of the Lost biker gang in this new story set in Liberty City. I’ve only played a little bit of the expansion so far, but it goes above and beyond what people expect from downloadable content on consoles. Well worth the price of entry.

Street Fighter IV
Platform: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (coming soon to PC)
Developer: Capcom/Dimps
Publisher: Capcom
RRP: $AU119.95 (PS3, 360 Standard), $AU159.95 (PS3, 360 Collector’s Edition)

It was due on Thursday, but Street Fighter IV found its way onto shelves yesterday, and it’s certainly pretty damn fine as far as fighting games go. Tons of additional content has been stuffed into the home release, including new characters, a challenge mode, and the all important online play mode. The Collector’s Edition includes two rather tiny figurines of Ryu and Viper, a small guide book detailing the moves for four characters, and a movie (DVD for 360, Blu Ray for PS3) detailing what has happened since Street Fighter II.

Death Tank
Platform: Xbox Live Arcade
Developer: Snowblind Studios/Flat Games
Publisher: Microsoft
RRP: 1200 Microsoft Points ($AU19.80)

The first of this week’s XBLA releases started life as a hidden game in the Saturn conversion of Powerslave, with a sequel hidden inside the Saturn’s version of Duke Nukem 3D. Death Tank will remind players a lot of the classic Scorched Earth, but the key difference is that all of the action happens in real time. 1200 MS points is a bit of an ask, though.

Exit 2
Platform: Xbox Live Arcade (Also available on PSP)
Developer: Taito Corporation
Publisher: Taito Corporation
RRP: 800 Microsoft Points ($AU13.20)

Taito continued the adventures of Mr. ESC on the PSP some time ago, but the local retail release of Exit 2 was rather limited. Fortunately they’ve chosen to follow the path of the original game again and release it onto Xbox Live Arcade in all its glory. While it looks like we’re in for more of the same rescuing fun as the original, one can always hold out hope for slightly faster character movement and better control.

The Maw: Brute Force
Platform: Xbox Live Arcade
Developer: Twisted Pixel
Publisher: Microsoft
RRP: 100 Microsoft Points ($AU1.65)

Frank and the Maw return in the first of three planned downloadable levels for the recently released XBLA title, The Maw. This particular level acts as a deleted scene, elaborating on the events of an encounter between Frank, the Maw and the Brutes. Should please anyone who was looking for a little more after finishing the main game.

Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice
Platform: PlayStation 3
Developer: Nippon Ichi Software
Publisher: Square Enix
RRP: $AU109.95

The third game in NIS’s popular turn based strategy RPG series makes its long awaited debut on Australian shores this week. Absence of Justice features a particularly twisted story set in the Maritsu Evil Academy, a demon school which is the polar opposite of a normal educational institution. So if you’ve got a couple hundred hours to kill, and you didn’t import the US release back in August, then Disgaea 3 should satisfy your hunger for hardcore S-RPGs for a good while.

Dragon Quest: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
Platform: Nintendo DS
Developer: Square Enix
Publisher: Square Enix
RRP: $AU69.95

We PAL gamers were hard done by for many years when it came to RPGs, and the Dragon Quest series was one of many that we missed out on entirely. Fortunately, Square Enix has been polishing up the early games in Japan’s most popular gaming series on the DS, and bringing them to all parts of the world. J-RPG fans have been a little spoilt lately, but this is another that most will need to pick up.

Eternal Sonata
Platform: PlayStation 3
Developer: Tri-Crescendo
Publisher: Namco Bandai
RRP: $AU99.95

The third J-RPG release of the week is an updated port of one that was released roughly a year ago on the Xbox 360. Eternal Sonata takes place in the dream world of classical musician Frederic Chopin, where the maestro and his gang set out on quest to find a cure for an illness threatening the life of one of his friends. I’ve heard a bit of a mixed response on this one from the J-RPG fans, but it certainly looks the part. PS3 version features new quests, events, endings, playable characters and more music from the legendary composer.

The House of the Dead: Overkill
Platform: Wii
Developer: Headstrong Games
Publisher: Sega
RRP: $AU79.95 (Standard), $AU109.95 (Bang Bang Box)

Headstrong Games embrace the heavy cheese factor of earlier House of the Dead games, and match it up with a 70s grind house horror theme and more puns than you can handle. It might be “just a rail shooter” but the atmosphere is thick, and the action is fast. The slightly more expensive “Bang Bang Box” comes with two “hand cannon” shells for your Wii remotes, and I understand they’re pretty solidly built.

Petz: My Baby Panda, Petz: My Kitty Family, Petz: My Monkey Family
Platform: Nintendo DS
Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
RRP: $AU59.95 each

Ubisoft grace retail stores with another offering of virtual pet titles, and since I don’t really have anything nice to say, I’ll keep it at that. The monkey does look suspisciously like the one from Outbreak, so you’d better keep your distance.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II
Platform: PC
Developer: Relic
Publisher: THQ
RRP: $AU99.95

I was honestly expecting a lot more time to pass between the announcement of Dawn of War II and the actual release, but here we are. There’s no doubt that many of you have made up your mind about the game based on the recent open beta, but there’s also a single player side to the game, which differs quite a bit from the usual fare. The multiplayer matchmaking is based on Games for Windows Live though, which some of us would rather forget.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 3
Platform: PSP
Developer: Konami
Publisher: Konami
RRP: $79.95

Spiky haired children star in a world which takes a card game too seriously. The GX series follows the adventures of a young chap named Juden Yuki, a Duel Monsters savant who’s rather crap at everything else in life. The third game in the series follows the third and fourth seasons of the show and features 3500 cards, so fans should adjust their expectations in line with that.

Noby Noby Boy
Platform: PlayStation Network
Developer: Namco Bandai
Publisher: Namco Bandai
RRP: $AU8.45

Nobody is quite sure exactly what Noby Noby Boy entails (apart from making two snake-like creatures grow – wash your filthy minds), but it’s safe to say that coming from the mind of Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi, it’s weird and wonderful. It probably won’t be as off the wall as say, a king going on a drunken bender and destroying all of the stars in the sky, but it should still be interesting and amusing. It’s cheaper than lunch, too.

Next week will be the busiest week of the year to date, with big hitters Killzone 2 and Halo Wars making their long awaited debuts. Also expect the reimagining of Dead Rising in Chop Til You Drop and the first of Nintendo’s New Play Control! releases with Pikmin on the Wii, former bottled water magnate and rapper 50 Cent’s latest adventure Blood on the Sand and a collection of high quality 16-bit gaming in the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection.
