PlayStation Portable sales reach fifty million

Sony have announced that they've reached a milestone in sales for the PlayStation Portable. Since its Japanese launch in the December of 2004, combined sales of the hand held now number fifty million. The milestone was hit late January this year, and includes combined sales of each of the three console revisions.

While the PlayStation Portable has been marred with a number of issues throughout its life - including piracy, and a number of poor software releases, Sony's first foray into the hand held market is a very good effort - with "more than" 2,000 games available for the platform on the UMD platform.

With a diverse range of features, and wireless LAN functionality, Sony's most recent firmware upgrades to the console have added support for the PlayStation Portable store, which can be accessed through wireless Internet.

Since this service has launched across various regions, Sony are proud of the digital catalogue which has been made available (including retail UMD discs and PlayStation One classics) which now numbers "over five hundred", with "many more" exciting titles from Sony Computer Entertainment and third party developers to be released in the future.

With the announcement that fifty million PlayStation Portable consoles have been sold, Sony have also noted that two-hundred million games have been sold to owners of the console.

Recent rumours regarding a new hardware iteration to the PlayStation Portable still linger, but Sony's announcement regarding sales of the PSP ends with intent to "vigorously promote the expansion of the PSP platform" with a "variety of interactive digital entertainment".

While that is a welcome statement, a quick glance at our release schedule seems to indicate that the upcoming titles on the platform are fairly scarce in comparison to other platforms.
