Brutal Legend - first look screenshots released

Electronic Arts have released a series of new screenshots from Tim Schafer's latest brainchild, the heavy-metal inspired Brutal Legend. Developed by Double Fine Productions, the same guys behind Psychonauts, the new production places gamers into the shoes of heavy-metal roadie Eddie Riggs.

Voiced by Jack Black, Riggs is tasked with creating a "hellacious army" to move an uncivilised, ancient world into a new "Age of Metal", free from oppression and slavery. The new screenshots display Riggs, and his mighty axe (both of the guitar and tree-cutting variety), along with being the first actual screenshots we've seen from the title.

For those that aren't familiar with the game, the description from the guys at Double Fine Productions oozes with the company's typical charm and humour:
Eddie Riggs has been drawn back through time to a mythical world dripped in Rock and Roll folklore; where great Metal titans once ruled and power chords rang from the countryside for all to hear. When an oppressed people request Eddie’s knowledge of modern warfare, he pulls from his own experience in the only occupation he’s ever had, a roadie for a Heavy Metal band. From this springs the most hellacious army man has ever seen, and thus brings this ancient world into the Age of Metal.

Brutal Legend is scheduled for a release at some point this year, and will be available on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Given that Brutal Legend comes from some of the finest developers of recent time, it will be very interesting to see how this one turns out.
