Steam loads up on SOE MMORPGs: EQII, Vanguard, and more
Steam and Sony Online Entertainment... sitting in a tree – first comes downloads, then goes the monies, and there goes your real-life. (Hah, I never finished third grade.) This is a big deal. No, this is huge. No it’s humongous. No, it’s freaking insane! Teaming with Valve Corporation is kind of a big “blow me” to Blizzard Entertainment by SOE. Fine it really isn’t but the drama is fun to think about.

Anyway, SOE has a huge stable of MMOGs. Steam users can find EverQuest, EverQuest II, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Pirates of the Burning Sea. It’s a win, win. To mark the occasion each title is being offered at a special price which includes thirty days of free gameplay.

As per usual when a deal like this is struck there’s the back-patting between the head honchos via press release.
Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve:

Sony Online Entertainment propelled the MMO genre and PC gaming into new era with the launch of EverQuest. SOE continues to evolve the genre and PC gaming with new universes such as Vanguard and Pirates of the Burning Sea, while continuously expanding the EverQuest and EverQuest II worlds with over 20 total expansions delivered electronically since the first EQ was released in March 1999.

John Smedley, President of SOE:

We are always looking for additional ways to introduce our great catalog of games to new audiences. It's hard to think of a larger group of PC gamers interested in multiplayer games than those connecting to Steam. We've long been a leader in MMOs and this agreement will help bring our exciting content to millions of additional online gamers around the world.

Considering there are over fifteen million Steam accounts worldwide a huge potential now exists for SOE to expand subscriptions. It’s also no surprise that many of SOE MMOGs are stagnating but at least they don’t pull the plug on their MMOGs like NCsoft did with Tabula Rasa and Auto Assault. Got too give SOE credit when it’s due.
