The Games on Net 2008 Awards
As we watch 2008 log off and 2009 jump into gear, we are looking back at some of our highlights for all the fantastic games released this year. It wasn't easy and with so many big titles and great games coming out there was much debate in the Newsbot den as to what game should take out the Games on Net 2008 Awards.

What will be labelled the top games in the consoles? Which was our favourite PC hit? What other awards do we have to give out? All will be explained inside as we round up the year by letting you guys know what we did and didn't like.

Top games for 2008
Xbox 360
Winner: Gears of War 2
Runner Up: Fable 2

Marcus Fenix came back and came back hard. This game was great and it was good to see it expanded on the original.
Wii
Winner: Super Smash Bros Brawl
Runner Up: Boom Blox

The popular sequel that showed some new additions to the original line-ups was hard to ignore, gamers could now put Sonic against Mario in the ultimate fighting area.
Playstation 3
Winner: Metal Gear Solid 4
Runner Up: LittleBigPlanet

It came down to experience for us and although I really love Sackboy, the skill and talent of Solid Snake edged him out for the top PS3 game.
Nintendo DS
Winner: The World Ends With You
Runner Up: Professor Layton and the Curious Village

This badge collecting JRPG became a bit favourite all around the world, we couldn't look past it.
PSP
Winner: Patapon
Runner Up: Echochrome

It would seem the music rhythm game has beaten the artistic puzzler. This was one of our hardest choices with little coming to the PSP this year.
PC
Winner: Fallout 3
Runner Up: Audiosurf

We almost didn't get a chance to see this game, but luckily this RPG was released and our real lives were in danger from its addiction.
Worst Game of the Year
Winner: Facebreaker
Runner up: Haze

There was much debate about this award, it seems we have all played at least one really bad game this year and wanted to talk about our horrible experience. But in the end the championship belt had to go to one horribly bad boxing game.
Most improved franchise
Winner: Fifa
Runner up: Guitar Hero: World Tour

Kicking a winning goal and getting past the world tours inclusion of other instruments, Fifa 09 brought something exciting to soccer (sorry! Football) fans worldwide. It really did raise the bar for sports games.
What were they thinking when they released this
Winner: Golden Axe: Beast Rider
Runner up: Mercenaries 2

Once again we were split on this decision. Games with bad control systems, buggy game play, horrible ideas were all in the running. But when you try and bring back a classic, don't take out everything that made it awesome!
Sleeper Hit
Winner: World of Goo
Runner up: Pure

The sleeper hit award goes out to a game that was just fantastic, but overlooked by most people. World of Goo has been bringing anyone who picked it up a nice surprise so it takes home the award.
Biggest let down of the year
Winner: Soul Calibur 4
Runner up: Far Cry 2

This was one of the biggest years that let the players down in terms of some game sequels not living up to the originals or the competition. Sure they had some nice ideas and trailers, but in the end we were only let down.
Most disappointing delay
Winner: Rock Band
Runner up: Ghostbusters

Okay it is a pretty good solid game, but why in this day and age did Australian gamers have to wait a YEAR to get it. It seems the only reason we have it was due to the competition. The next question is when will we see the sequel?
Nice idea - Bad implimentation
Winner: Spore
Runner up: Mirror's Edge

The game looked good, sounded great and we all couldn't wait. However it seemed it was just a nice idea. This was an easy choice for the two finalists, however picking an overall winner was hard. Spore kept us waiting forever and just could have copied from 5 other games...
Public Enemy Number 1
Winner: South Australian attorney-general Michael Atkinson
Runner up: DRM

We feel we don't need to explain this point. Just give Australia the R18+ classification and we can all forget this horrible year of banned games and edited versions.

With that we all hope you had an excellent 2008 and gamed as much as you can. Now we can only hope 2009 comes out with some great games to continue this massive growing trend. Bring it on!
+ 27 Digg it!
