[iDEF] eGames 2008 - the Guitar Hero Finals
Up next in our eGames 2008 video coverage is a selection of videos from the TekTime Guitar Hero 3 final, which took place on the main stage on Sunday afternoon.

These are the top five Guitar Heroes from around Victoria (well, the top five who made it to the show, anyway), and we've captured their stage performances in glorious moving pictures for your visual enjoyment. If you're a budding rockstar, maybe you could pick up some ideas about what works... and maybe a few about what doesn't!

The stage was set, as the three judges took their seats - Zombe from TekTime, Mazza from Sonic Jihad and crowd favourite, Zero Punctuation's Yahtzee, each equipped with score cards and a musical ear.

After some initial setup fun (on-stage calibration - is it the 21st century version of tuning?), the audience hushed, and Pickle stepped onto the stage to tackle The Number Of The Beast.

Gazing intently at the screen for almost the entire tune, Pickle wasn't necessarily the most flashy performer on the stage. But - what he may have lacked in showmanship, he made up for with a rock solid production, impressing the judges into handing out 8s across the board, for a total of 24.

PdGeorge was dressed appropriately for his Welcome to the Jungle rendition - with a snazzy hat/jacket/wig combo the likes of which we'd never seen. This is one rocker who put more emphasis on presentation, but may have let his concentration slip a little when it came to hitting all the notes. The judges took this into consideration, and handed down a vote of 23 for his rockin' skills.

I'm not sure what the rules are about wearing a t-shirt of the game you're playing. Is it like wearing a band t-shirt to that band's gig? Either way, Andrew flipped the guitar over, propped his foot up on a chair, and proceeded to show everybody just how it was meant to be done. With the unusual choice of Cult of Personality, you may notice him playing the instrument behind his head, singing along with the lyrics - and hitting a 400 note streak in the middle there. The judges certainly picked up on that, announcing they were looking for 'excellence', before giving him two 9s and an 8, for a total of 26.

Our second wig appearance of the day came with Jessie, rocking the 'Fro and some nifty shades. He started his performance with some trash talk, before launching into The Number of the Beast (another second for the day!). Aiming for that combination of showmanship and skill, this performance was packed with some rockin' moves, some stage-struttin', and a few clanging missed notes. The judges were suitably impresed, awarding him straight 8s for another 24, meaning Jessie was in equal second place.

With another unusual (and tricky) song choice, Ally, the only girl in the finals, decided to play Monster - and she did so hardly looking at the screen. Some notes were dropped, but the crowd definitely gave her points for performance, and for trying something a little different (over and above the now-popular behind-the-head move). It seemed the judges were impressed too, handing out another straight dose of 8s, bringing her into equal second place as well.

So... who won?

Those of you playing at home will be able to tell easily that Andrew is well out in front of a pack of rockers languishing at 24. He raised his guitar to the sky, thanked the appropriate people, and humbly grinned at the crowd's loving attention.

This left three, all tied for second place. TekTime resorted to the age-old method of getting the crowd to vote for their favourites. A few short shouts later, and Ally picked up second place, Pickle won third, Jessie fourth, and PdGeorge (who by now had removed his wig), rounded the afternoon out in fifth.

While there were numbers awarded, there were no real winners or losers on the day - just some talented gamers rocking out on stage, performing Guitar Hero on a huge screen in front of a receptive (and vocal) audience.

Congratulations to everybody who was involved - and that includes all the budding rockers who tried out in the exhaustive heats held over the course of the weekend, and the organisers - it'll be great to see you all again next year. May I suggest a Battle of the Bands, perhaps?
