By "into 2009", Namco Bandai mean that they'll be supporting Hellgate London until the 31st of January, 2009. Game servers for Hellgate: London will shut down the following day, on the 1st of February, 2009.
Early reports of Hellgate: London showed that the title held great promise, being developed by a number of ex-Blizzard employees, who had worked on Diablo II. Upon its release, Hellgate: London was plagued by bugs and other issues, which ultimately lead to a steep decline in player numbers and subscriptions.
The closure of Flagship Studios and Hellgate: London marks it the second (predominately) online-only game to fail in recent times, with the failure of Fury (and its consequential shut down) also occurring earlier this year.
Interestingly, both titles were released in October of 2007 - a month that could perhaps be considered a bad omen for the release of MMO-like titles.
