For the World - new Last Remnant trailer

I have to say I've been fairly pleased to see the number of RPGs on the Xbox 360 increasing. Whether you believe it's part of Microsoft's plan to conquer Japan, or simply that developers are aware that not every Xbox 360 owner is solely interested in FPS and racing titles, if you're a fan of the genre, it's been a pleasing year with quite a few releases and announcements. One of the new RPGs headed our way is The Last Remnant, and SquareEnix have been kind enough to preview a new trailer at the Tokyo Game Show. Let's take a look.

Well, what the? This is a trailer full of points of interest. The first thing to cause me to slop my tea were the opening words "A SquareEnix RPG for the world". As opposed to their other incredibly successful series, which have been worldwide bestsellers, which were what, only for Madagascar? This whole concept seems to go against Microsoft's campaign into the east. Surely they'd want a SquareEnix RPG that's exactly the same as every SquareEnix RPG ever?!
But perhaps, while Microsoft use SquareEnix to break into Japan, SquareEnix are using Microsoft to break out, not from their country of origin, but out of the JRPG genre? SquareEnix fans are traditionally associated with the Playstation, and can often be extremely vocal in their antagonism towards anything the company tries to do that breaks the mold even slightly. So perhaps The Last Remnant is really going for broke on the chance of catching hold of a new type of fan, from a new console base?
Certainly the look of the game is quite different from what I'd expect from a JRPG; it's much less pretty and cute, kind of gritty and bleak. this would certainly back up the idea that The Last Remnant is trying to appeal to hardened FPS addict. My analysis falls apart during the rest of the trailer. Sure, there's enough action and dodgy pommy voice acting to make your gut fanboy feeling "This is no Final Fantasy", but there's enough overlap in the form of weird little hats, Tidus/Vaan clone heroes, and Bahamut, that Final Fantasy trademark, to prove very worrying.
In any case, we'll all find out when The Last Remnant is released for Xbox 360 this November - still no word on the PC and PS3 releases. In the meantime, if you're in the dark over this title, you might like to check out holo's preview.
