The number of active war participants has escalated from a half-million to three quarters of a million in a very short time. Keep in mind these aren’t actual full-time subscriptions but registrations as the first month is free and players can cancel their accounts immediately. To stay or not to stay after that initial trial month? That is the question.
The true measure of success comes after the first initial month and whether or not the playerbase continues growth or a plateau begins. Subscription numbers are very important. In contrast to World of Warcraft’s launch Warhammer Online’s early numbers are astounding. World of Warcraft struck 800,000 registered players worldwide in its first month. The game now sits near 11 million subscribers and many factors attribute to its crazy success. It is best explained as being a phenomenon. It’s possible that Warhammer Online will beat World of Warcraft’s first month numbers as a new emerging MMOG into the marketplace. Granted, WoW was hard to find in the
first month due to demand. All is fair in love and war.

Mark Jacobs, Mythic Entertainment CEO, has stated numerous times that Warhammer: Age of Reckoning is not competing with World of Warcraft. It is not a World of Warcraft killer. Fair enough, although it is competing in many ways Warhammer Online will not topple World of Warcraft. Nonetheless this should prove to be interesting as a battle heats up this winter. Warhammer Online faces stiff competition from three different MMOG expansions. If after the New Year Warhammer Online can sustain one million plus subscriptions then Mythic Entertainment will claim a throne in their own right.
