[48hrGames 08] 48 hr comp - Day 3 and results!
I was hoping to get this done on Day 3, but as the clocked ticked down our time we spent as much of it as we could checking off bits and pieces and getting our final game working. So in one special news post you get all the Day 3 events as well as the fun that followed into the BBQ!

So after I left you last time there was 20 hours left. Night was starting to fall and most teams were going to be in for a long night. As the hours went on and on, teams started to fall apart. Code wasn't working, people slept in chairs or on keyboards and the time limit was drawing ever so close...

My team working away with other teams in the background

We had a working prototype and just needed to add a few more things but as usual this didn't go our way and we started to slip. All of a sudden a teammate appeared with two fresh packs of Red Bull. We grabbed a quick dinner and discussed how to tackle the remaining problems and basically came up with the plan to get things we needed out of the way asap.

Working on into the night and the team, like many in the room, were starting to get hit by fatigue. I told most of the guys to get some shut eye and most did around the 4am mark. While I still hadn't slept I decided maybe I should get a few hours, but as my head hit the pillow the answers came to me and I found myself awake and coding instantly. There was 4 of us still awake at this stage, but two dropped off in what looked like uncomfortable positions.

Some code and an early prototype

With about an hour or so left the judges arrived and wandered around to get a basic idea for the games. Teams pitched their projects to them and showed them off as best they could. Ours was still on the buggy side and was in desperate need of some balance tweaks. We told them about it and they generally impressed, all of them! They really did take an interest to it which raised morale with only 60 minutes left!

Still awake, the clock was ticking down and some teams looked calm, some teams gave up and others worked furiously to fix bits and pieces. We had a few issues when trying to get a working exe out and luckily we got it in with 7 minutes to spare! The game was done, the team was happy and we had a BBQ and a two-hour wait for the judges' decision.

Some slept where they could, others didn't

We were let back in and they proceeded to announce a few honorable mentions who were runner up to the winner. These were games that were so close to winning but just missed a little something here or there that would have put them over the edge.
Team Echidna: Whirlpool Wipeout - great use of co-op play
Preemptive Revenge: Summerland Harvest - strong game mechanics and strategy
Lurkers Craft: Summertime Getaway - excellent graphics and use of 3 key words
Laserback Turtles: Melon-choly - solid gameplay and elegant design
Honorable mention! We were pumped! Preemptive Revenge came, saw and got somewhere! We overcame viruses (total casualties: 1), power failures (total: 7) and windows explorer crashing on a comp (total: 26). In all honestly we have only been playing with Darkbasic Pro for about 3/4 months so this was unsuspected and we are very happy with the result.
The winner:
Melonaut by SIF 90
Fantastic on all criteria - very well scoped for the time, really original use of seasons, and fun to play
Yes, sif90 came back for another year and another title. A nice little multiplayer game using the xbox 360 controllers. It was fun and a nice display of what can really be achieved. Congratulations to them and I hope we see them next year.

Almost finished and feed people are happy people

All was not over as there was some extra awards to hand out.
Other Awards:
Best Pitch (even though they didn’t finish) - Duct Tape
Most Tenacity (continuing even when half the team left) - Distortion
Most Ambitious (trying to do an adventure game in 48 hours is a big call!) - Portal Marmosets

No Sleep awards:
Kyle - Equidna
Josh - Pseudorandom
Andrew - Black Wolf
Tim - Preemptive Revenge
Ash - Preemptive Revenge

Most Noodles Consumed:
Eddie (Friction Studios) - 25+
I felt sorry for the two guys left from Distortion. Their team up and left them, in their sleep apparently, but they stuck around to the end and did the best they could. Team Duct Tape really had an unique and fantastic idea. I really wish they were able to complete it, but I think next year they should stick to making the game as opposed to playing them. Everytime I walked past one or two of them were playing a game or watching a movie. Oh well, at least they had fun.

More happy BBQ pics

I must say a huge big thank you to Truna for organising this event. It was fantastic, fun and an awesome experience. But no one does this alone, so I must thank Lubi and Jacina for getting the room and showers for us. Chen, Beckie, and Katy for keeping an eye on us, making me want to play games and entertaining us as much as we entertained you. Finally the judges for coming along and supporting this event, so thank you to John Passfield (Senior Game Designer, Pandemic), Gordon Moyes (Exec Producer, Krome Studios), Jackie Turnure (Head of Development and Production, Hoodlum) and Yahtzee Crowshaw.

Some more of the BBQ and our prize!

If you ever get a chance to do something like this I highly recommend it! I was very proud of my team's achievements and a massive thanks goes out to them for their time and support.

Our game you ask? Well just for you it has been added to our file library so you too can enjoy Summertime Harvest! 9mb zipped and is a 61mb .exe file that plays straight out. You will need directx9.0c to play it but it should work fine. Head on over to the games design forums, for we will be looking for your feedback! We will be continuing it soon as well, so let us know what you liked or didn't and any other criticism or comments you have. In the forums there will be more details of up coming events like this so don't be a stranger and show us what you have done.

Once again a huge thanks to everyone and congrats to all teams involved, a monster effort and a lot of fun to be a part of.
PS: If you are playing at home I actually lasted the competition without sleep and partied on into the night for a total of 64 hours straight.
+ 8 Digg it!
