Nintendo has never really fared very well in that country, suffering from years of neglect before being picked up by a local distributor... who soon went broke. This has contributed to New Zealand being one of the few countries in the world who do not love the Wii - but this may be about to change.
It's been announced that from September 1st, Nintendo Australia will be taking over advertising and product distribution in New Zealand, as well as in Australia.
You thought it was difficult to find Nintendo hardware in Australia - spare a thought for the New Zealand gamers who have been denied service or products for years, missing out on some great deals available just a hop, skip and a jump away in Australia.
To try and fix some of the damage that's been caused, Nintendo are undertaking a huge advertising campaign in New Zealand, promoting Brain Training, Wii Sports and Wii Fit as the main focus. There are five Nintendo DS and six Wii campaigns planned to hit the country before Christmas.

This may also mean good news for Australia, if you squint. If our local distributor is now dealing with two territories, it makes sense to think that the bigwigs at Nintendo Japan will show them a little love, which will flow on to us, the avid gaming fan.
