With an ever increasing trend towards revivals of old stories within the gaming industry, it is always refreshing to see someone take some risks with interesting and new ideas as opposed to endless repetition.
After a long time working on the Battlefield series, Dice have decided to try something new. Surprisingly, it doesn't even have anything to do with warring factions and all that stuff that comes from the Battlefield universe. The new title, Mirror's Edge covers completely new ground and has different gameplay mechanics.
Today, we've got the first trailer from Mirror's Edge which shows off a little bit of what we can expect from the game.
Set instead in a Utopian society instead of a warzone, Mirror's Edge chronicles the character Faith, who exists within a society in which 'information is heavily monitored'. Faith is a Runner, an agile courier who delivers information from place to place. Anyone who has read Orwell's 1984 can immediately see the inspiration for the plot of Mirror's Edge.
Despite on the surface giving the appearance of a Utopian society, the freedom of information and actions of individuals are regulated heavily, causing resistance and crime to spark up. The player is placed within Faith's shoes, and is being hunted.
Graphics and gameplay, as assessed from the new trailer tend to hint a little at Portal inspired gameplay, only without the obvious portals. Promising fast pace chases and intense combat, Mirror's Edge looks like a combination of 1984, Ultraviolet and Aeon Flux, along with a dash of The Matrix.
Mirror's Edge is set for release on PC, PS3 and the Xbox 360. No word yet on release dates, but we'll keep you informed.
