The Mac (or more to the point Apple) has been a long forgotten gaming platform with the dominance of the Windows based PC gaming market. Many gamers tend to forget that the Apple was there first when it came to home PC gaming. Good old games such as Lode Runner, Karateka, and Captain Goodnight were definitely amongst my favourites on the Apple platform. Then you had the original Castle Wolfenstein which I spent many hours playing as a kid. Just recently id Software have announced that they will be developing their new engine to work specifically with the OSX operating system. This is all good news for Apple fanatics and is sure to create competition in the gaming development community.
The Cider engine is a unique piece of code which actually allows for software to run without having to be completely rewritten for the Mac. Scott Cronce, EA Vice President, said of the project,
"Leveraging TransGaming's Cider technology to bring our hit franchises to Mac users is an exciting first step in delivering the video game experience that Mac users deserve ... With the launch of these titles, it truly is the best time to be a Mac gamer."This is all good news. Obviously, having a more diverse number of platforms in which to release games means a greater number of income streams for developers and publishers. This can only lead to better games for gamers.
