''App Store Model in Freefall'', Claims EA

Electronic Arts have come out swinging against the concept of app stores, with their Chief Creative Director Richard Hilleman saying that the focus is now on in-game purchases. "Our current experience is that the App Store model is essentially in freefall. That increasingly people in that context need to pay in-game versus out of the game", says Hilleman.

"The good news," says Hilleman, "is that our experience with DLC has been that if we do those strategies successfully, that we get payment rates that are far superior to almost everybody else in the online commerce space." Seems like a bold claim from Hilleman considering the success of the App Store model for companies like Apple, but with even Apple recently bringing in-game purchases to their sales model, perhaps the future really is one powered by microtransactions.
