New Kinect Hacks Allow Motion Control of WoW, Robot Minions

Our inevitable future
Kinect's started looking a whole lot more interesting since hackers got a hold of the technology. Two awesome new uses for the system have popped up on YouTube in the last couple days, demonstrating the possibilities for the hardware are endless: A hands-free way of playing World of Warcraft and a motion-controlled humanoid robot that mimics it's users actions.

Developed by Evan A. Suma and fellow researchers at the University of Southern California’s Institute for Creative Technologies, the team have developed a fully gesture controlled control system for World of Warcraft. The system is demonstrated in the video below. Skip Rizzo of the UoSC's Institute for Creative Technologies hopes that the control system will aide with rehabilitation and the fight against childhood obesity.

The software for the system, created using OpenNI, is available to download from the FAAST website and can be modified to work with other games.

Also revealed this week we have a humanoid robot created by Taylor Veltrop. Although highly experimental at this stage, the control method, which mimics the users actions, illustrates what could be one step closer to Judgement Day
